Icon2 96 Honda Accord Speedometer Help

I have a:
96 Accord LX, 4-door, Automatic, 2.2L, 4cyl.

My speedometer has decided to start working only part time, only kicking in when it wants to. This also effects my odometer...but NOT my cruise.

I am prepared to replace the VSS, but I'm affraid that this may not be my problem since the cruise works consistantly, with or without the speedometer. I'm wondering if it may be a harness issue instead...or something altogether different.

Can someone give me some clarity on this issue before I spend the time and pay the "small-handed nephew" to replace the VSS?

Thank you!

i think it may be the VSS. i never tried the cruise, but my symptoms were: the speedometer was acting crazy then eventually stopped working, trip and odometer stopped working, d4 light was blinking, and occasionally the CEL would pop up.

should be worth replacing anyway, as it costs ~$15 shipped on ebay for an aftermarket.

Thank you, I have one ordered from an ebay seller. That's the first place I'll start. Hopefully it will do the trick.

Vehicle Speed Sensor, it's not easy to find, but it's easy to change once you do.

The Problem Is with The Circuit Board On The Rear Of The speedometer Head. If Your speed sensor is not working than your cruise would not work and you would get a check engine light. There are Sellers on ebay where you can buy a cluster to get this circuit board. If u search google for accord speedometer u will find some articles on how to re-solder the circuit board.

Tonight I learned how to solder. I re-soldered the circuit board for the speedometer and it seems to have done the trick. The speedo is working fine now. Thank you for the knowledgable input...and for saving me money and time. God bless.

A simple search of the forums would have answered this question for you. As well as have pictures of the exact solder joints in question. The changes in temperature and humidity slowly cause the solder joints to swell/contract then crack and break away from the board itself, only connecting every so often giving the intermittent issue.

I am glad you got this working. It is a fairly common issue with the 94-97 Accords.
