Default Installing my seat as low as possible and keeping within FIA/NASA rules

Wel I scored a bargain

Ordered these right after:

SO I rolled her out of the garage today to install the seat:

OLD recaro out to fit the new:

Now the problem.... When I'm seated I almost bump my head to the ceiling. With my helmet I can't sit up straight....

So is it possible to mount the seat to the chassis? Bolt it weld it? And is this FIA/NASA approved?

I need to remove a small piece though (center bottom of the pic)

So 2 questions

1. Can I remove this piece of metal and how to do this

2. How to install my seat as low as possible with approval from the FIA/NASA

Same here as slammed... but i welded boxes off the back of the front seat mounting rail and then on the left side extended the mounting point with a box. drilled holes in those 3 boxes then used the back right mounting hole still. then I bolted the seat brackets to the floor then mount the seat. My seat bottom is only quarter to 1/2 inch off the floor max... Its the lowest I could get it without serious mods to the floor pan

I mig'd 1/8" plates to the floor and bolted the sidemounts right to it. Can't get any lower than that.

I did the extreme.
Removed the stock mount points. Put in a 1/8 plate to re-enforce the flimsy stock floor.
Used to have it welded to the floor but it limited me from moving the seat back far enough to egress the car. It also limited the amount i could tilt the seat back.
Being short i needed to be closer to the wheel and pedals.

I installed a box frame, welded to the floor using one and half inch C stock.
Before welding, I drilled holes in the box so the sliders could be bolted to the frame.
Nuts were tacked in and are sturdy.
Now I can tilt the seat back much more, and its more comfortable on my back as well as the sliders allow me more room to move the seat back to egress the car out the window.

I think in the future i might trade away my Cobra Sebring for something like what you have.

the recaro rails tend to mount the seat higher try flipping them around or using lower rails like sparco or bride lows or something. I have recaro spg mounted with sparco rails that are flipped to allow seat to be low oh yeah with custom seat brackets that are mounted to cage and center tunnel. gl use you imagination before you tear up your car and even go to a local track event there would more than enough people to ask questions and see examples.

Charles isnt 6,8 like Spence but.. Damn Spence thats tall.
Its a good idea to get out, and see everything before chopping things up like Spence and me, and Sander did. Also take into account how low your cage is.
Mine could of been higher but I bought the shell ready to go and i had no imput into how it was constructed.

Cage configuration was my issue also. I'm so low that some crests are REAL blind.

The little bit I've driven Sander's car, this was the case also. Mine is mostly ok, but still pretty low.

Hmmm the mugen rails/sidemounts on my SPG get me pretty low already. I am not sure of how much lower you can go without hurting your visibility by quite alot. And I'm 5'11" so unless you are a giant I don't really see the point.

A friend of mine and very good driver suggested to do this on purpose so that it forces you to look out ahead.

It works really well, but you have to really trust and know the track/car

I agree with this theory.
I find myself seeing things materialize ahead of me much sooner than usual.

I've had rollcage / helmet clearance issues in the past as well. I'm not sure on how firm your raceday tech inspections are, although I'd say that head contact with a rollcage is a more serious safety issue than a non-FIA bracket!

My best luck has been with using Bride FG rails. I'm currently in a Sparco Corsa seat with the mounting holes re-drilled, at 1" above the old (original) holes. That allows the seat to be lowered between the rails, and is something that isn't too noticeable unless you're looking for it. You may need to trim off a bit of the plastic that goes around the seatbelt openings, but otherwise it's got me sitting properly, without cage contact.

Hope this helps!

This works with stock seat provisions on floor. It is highly adjustable and keeps a very low profile if needed. If your having helmet issues hitting roll cage you can recline your seat position to make a bit more room.

^^ those look sweet! I'm like 1.86 meters long (6.10??)and need to have the seat a little more to the back. No one ever mounted there seat to the car?

Buddy club has some low mounts but not sure they will fit my seat and gives me the clearance I need.

Its prolly time to drop off your whip at the fabricator and have your seat mounted in a fixed location.
The profile of adjustable seat rails for use with aftermarket seats can only be so low.

Sorry

This set up above is cool and all but it doesnt apply to all seats.
I do like that it has more adjustability than most!
Each seat, and person has different issues.
Tilting my seat and getting it to slide back was important

It works with Cobra, Recaro, Racetech, Sparco, Bunny Club and Kirkey. Should one seat bracket apply to all seats I dont think thats possible.

I be postin cause it was a major problem for me.
Cage built a little too low.
Cobra Sebring Seat. the one with the head restraint.
Tilting/moving (sliding the seat back) far enough so the head restraint part would give ample room to egress the car from the window.
None of this could be done with a ots solution.
The seating config for my car has changed three times trying to get it right.

at 5'10" I shouldn't need to sit really low but with a 30" inseam, most of my height is in my torso... With my Sparco Evo 2 and low mount rails I'm only an inch or so from the roof (helmet + sunroof'd integra).

Once get a rollbar/back half of a cage installed I'll be removing the sunroof, headliner and stock seat mounts... I was thinking of bolting to a plate welded to the floor but I may provision for sliders if it turns out to be too low.

To date i dont know of any bolt in seat rails/sliders that are Fia approved. If you look closely at side brackets from many popular seats you will find no sfi numbers or ident markings. If you are running Nasa Hpd or Hc the tech will verify your seat is securely mounted (No wiggle). As long as this is the case you are good to go.
