Timing belt tensioner
how often can the timing belt tensioner go bad by chance? does it fail when it stops holding tension completely or can it loose tension and you drive the car? wondering if i need to replace mine now, since i just put a new timing belt on and my last one was eaten by spec B's

Some guys are even swaping out the oil filled ones for the regular spring loaded ones.
NE1 ?
All B series use spring loaded tensioners. I know a few people who have H22A motors that put in H23A spring loaded tensioner system.
I prefer installing timing belts on H22A's cuz its super easy with the right tools. If you don't have the right tools, its a PITA.

The only time you need the spring is when you adjust the tension right? Once you lock the tensioner bolt down it isn't going to move.

Yea, my spring fell off one day when I was doing my timing belt. Fell out through the bottom of my motor. Thought about putting it back on, but after looking at it for a moment too long, I said screw it. Just need to use a metal hanger to hook onto the hole where the spring used to attach to. No biggie.
