B17A1 CTR (12:1) smog
I just got a B17A1 longblock and currently having it assembled. But before I have it completed I want to know if it would pass smog? Right now I have CTR pistons and have everything to make it run 12:1 compression ratio. I also plan to put all the smog equiptment on the car, also all the other parts in the block are factory. I have called a few places and asked but they couldent help me with any information due to the rareity of the setup. So in short will my 12:1 CTR in a B17A1 pass smog? Also what would it take to make it pass smog with my CTR pistons? (pistons, gasket thickness, CR). Any information would be appriciated. Thanks.
It will pass most likely if you keep the same fuel system, stock injectors, fuel rail, stock fuel pressure, and keep the emissions equipment. Raising the compression results in more complete/efficient combustion.
The only problem with 12:1 compression is NOx. This tends to rise with increasing compression. But this is only a problem if you live in an area where NOx is tested (like Enhanced Smog Check II areas of California). If this causes a problem, a new cat might help.
Thank you all for your info. Everyone I asked now seems to be saying I will be having problems with NOx. I guess I will be ok with the high compression, im sure there are ways of combating it. If you have more ideas please share them with me. And in california I think we test for everything.
