Default How well does DIGITAL ATSC work in the vehicle (Digital TV)

I did a quick search and found nothing on ATSC. I'm wondering how well it works and about the reception. Where does the signal come from? Is it from my local TV provider? I'm thinking about getting an ATSC tuner for my car but will I get reception? How many channels will I get? Have they overcame the doopler effect so I can watch while I drive (well not me obviously but if I'm on a road trip can my passengers watch?)?

As long as your not moving it works fine. Once you start moving things aren't so great. Broadcast televison is highly directional. Meaning you need an antenna pointed in a certain direction in order to pic up a clear signal. Obviously not so easy in a car. I'd say if your within 10 miles of the broadcaster should work fairly well. Outside that your chances fall rather quickly.

your missing the point that Nsxxtreme pointed out: TV by design sucks in a moving vechicle-no way around it. Even the DirectTV dishes (car use) have little antennas inside that track for best picture. There is no way around it.

Now if you want it for when you park it will work pretty great

im not missing what he is saying but i think they have overcome it to 180mph with special antennas. i saw it on youtube though so idk how accurate that was though. so back to my question, who would broadcast an atsc signal? I called the cable company and they said they didnt.

Over the air (local) stations use ATSC.

umm...BS? Sattelite yes, if you want a big dome on top of your car. In a RV it works fine it just automatically tracs the Sats. But sats have a know movement so its easy to design to this. TV stations vary greatly in location across the US. No one is gonna build a tracking system for that. I have also seen some companies offering TV over cellular networks as a data stream.

A TV signal is extremly directional and its a very high frequency signal so is absorbed by surrounding area easily. It's just not going to work reliable with anything a consumer can buy unless your parked.

Then your cable provider is an idiot or the person answering the phone doesn't know what they are talking about. ATSC is a diital standard EVERYONE follows who broadcats TV.

I agree with nsx, The tv works great depending on the area you are in and if your parked. And about 80% when driving. Also what unit you have plays a factor. Do not use the cheap attennas or converters.

Is a brand that I work with and I reccomend. Were I live it works great. But when you get close to the beach its falls off. So inner city is great.

Also you don't have to have a big dome on top of your car for sat tv anymore. Mine is color matched and you can't even notice it. But this is on a suv.

Interesting don't know much about those but I suspect that is not standard Sattelite TV. Have you ever set up a sattelite just one degree means the difference between no signal and perfect signal? They must be sending that down similiar to how xm radio works. Must be a highly compressed mpeg format. If it were this simple people would toss the dishes and throw these things up on top of their house. Looks like you also have to have a clear view of the southern sky us up north would be SOL.

Its alot different then the home unit. It will not work with the home units. I tried. Unless you use the complete mobile unit in home. Also you can not use the home card in it anymore. The programing is different too. It also reads 30-40 seconds ahead of time to prevent drop pictures. I feel you about the home units. I was putting up x-mass lights and came into no tv. I'll find out more about the signal it uses. I never really asked them about it. Took there install classes and was set on my way as a dealer. But I traveled from here to seattle and had no problems. and from here to florida and had one issue in texas.
