My girlfriend was borrowing my accord ('97 2.2 LX) since her grand am blew a lower intake manifold gasket and while driving it today, she encountered a loud bang followed by grinding. She pulled the car over and near the passenger front wheel she noticed metal shavings. There wasn't any fluid on the ground so I am assuming the axle stripped? I replaced it about a year ago but it was from ebay. (I know, bad call)

Any other ideas? There was no prior indication of issues.

The car has 168k on it.
