I have a 93 Del Sol Si with A/C. It seems to be going out as in taking longer to chill. My question is, how do I determine myself which kind of A/C I have ? I know that 94-newer have R134a, and 93-older have R12, but I also found out that certain 93's had R134a too. Looking into the engine bay, what would show me which one I have ??? When I do find out which one, what would be the easiest to re-charge for me ? Any help in this matter would greatly be appreciated . . . .

 

Look in the engine bay for A/c service labels. If you need to convert to R134a then you need to change all the o-rings in the system, the dryer, and bi-nomial switch. Evap the system completely of all the r12 refg. oil and refill with oil that is compatible with r134a.

 

Found out that it is R12, anyone have a ballpark figure of how much to convert ???

 

I had a 1993 Ford Taurus back in the day, and a shop wanted about $2k for a switchover. Hopefully you plan on doing it yourself, or it may cost you an arm and a leg. Can you get a recharge with R12, or is that impossible now?

 

DON'T switch over, you can buy R12 on EBAY , I just refilled my 93 Del Sol about a week ago with R12.

Just make sure your system is working on all fronts, if all is good just add (1) can of r12 to be safe , I did and now I'm getting 40's-50's in noon day sun


Just make sure the condensor is working , the fan in front of it , the condensor is right next to the radiator, in fact it too looks like a radiator with a fan in front of it, that should turn on when you turn on your system

If you can rent a guage to check the pressure go ahead

I took a chance and just added (1) can of r12 and all is good no leaks no problems

r12 works better in a stock r12 system

I think a kit on Ebay is $50 with hose and 1 can of R12, pretty easy to do yourself

r134 is ok ,it's just that "OUR" systems were built for r12 so why not use what the system was built for? r12 is available and it's cheaper than converting


Just puncture the can with the included hose, let a little freon out to get rid of air connect then to low pressure side (the one closest to the engine) connect to low pressure, turn on AC full MAX COLD and wait about 10 minutes for the entire can to drain into the system, shake can now and then

DO NOT let the can fall on it's side while filling

If you need help find a small shop or a friendly mechanic, but it's almost as easy as putting air in a tire


My dealership wanted $200 and I've heard r134 in a r12 system is not as efficent as r12 in a r12 system

That would be the Condenser, not the Compressor. The compressor is bolted to a bracket which is in turn bolted to the block and is belt driven by the Crankshaft of the engine.
