94Delsol -- AC squealing; pressure high, discharged, now not cooling!
My girlfriend took the Del Sol to the shop yesterday to get a few things done. She'd been complaining for a few months about it squealing sometimes when the AC was on and somewhat bogging down when it did squeal. I thought maybe it was just the belt; she asked the guys over there to take a look at it and they said it was fine. They hooked up a gauge and showed her it was overfilled; so she asked if they could take out a bit. So the guy did... and now she says it's not cooling at ALL. No air conditioning whatsoever.
Do you think too much was discharged? I asked her if she saw the gauge after they let some out, but she said they told her she had to leave due to it being toxic or what not.
My question is... do you guys think too much was let out? It worked really well before hand. It doesn't squeal anymore... so i'm assuming it WAS in fact due to being overfilled. Do you think she should have the whole system recharged? Could it be that being overfilled has destroyed seals in the compressor?
I guess the best thing would be to take it and have them check the levels. These guys aren't AC people and were trying to help... now she says she could have dealt with the squeal instead of no AC!

Oh, and I know they changed things from r12 to now r134? I think... What year did they change? Would my 94 VTEC (b16 factory) have the newer r134 freon components?
If I WERE to have to change the compressor, i'm assuming all would need to be discharged?

Your system should be R134a. Check the label under the hood.
Buy/rent a manifold gauge set and measure the pressures on the high and low sides with the A/C on and the engine idling. Some auto parts stores offer free rentals on gauges. If the system is just low on refrigerant, you can then recharge the system yourself using the gauges.

94 you should have r134 sytem, check the 2 AC nozzles
R12 has threads on the OUTSIDE (like a tire valve)
R134 has threads on the inside (like an inverted tire valve) or quick connect system
Why would they just empty out just a little pressure? Makes no sense, they should have checked for leaks, possibly drain refill system, check o rings, etc.
This shop sounds like low quality
