Default paint preping ???

I got a 98 EK hatchback that I am prepping to paint. I have pulled everything out of it cause I am painting the inside of the hatch area also. When I pulled the carpet and spare tire out theirs mat stuff that's on the floor. I don't know what it is but its like a heat pad or something that has a black tar style sticky stuff on it to stick to the car. I have been using a heat gun to heat it up than a paint scraper the peel it up. Its working OK but wanted to know if there was a better way to do it. Than once its scraped theirs still a lil bit of the tar stuff left. Whats the best way to get it off the car to paint it.

use dry ice to make the tar cold and hard and then try chipping it out.
