I have a friend that is parting out his car. im about to get his engine harness, 0bd1 dizzy, and his tranny. What i wanna know is how do i exactly know if its a gsr tranny and not an ls since its been cleaned and painted silver so it looks brand new. how can i tell the difference between a gsr and ls since it doesnt have no stickers or anything on it.

 

that is a verrrrryy difficult question to answer but what i can tell you is. when you install it GSR tranny has short gears and both tires spin when you launch. as off a LS tranny only 1 wheel would spin.

 

gsr trannys never came with a factory lsd , so both tires wont spin when you launch

 

not necassarily, i have a b16a2 hooked up to a USDM GSR tranny and they DONT come with LSDs from the factory, i belive u have to open it up and count the teeth?

 

ahh yes that is true. i forgot to mention that... well you can tell if its lsd but looking at the internals but i dont know how to tell since i dont know all about transmissions

 

JDM GSR transmissions came with optional LSD.

Casings are the same between the GSR and the LS , so as states the only way to tell would be to take off the casing and count the final drive gears teath.

I forget off my head how many ls and gsr have (but the calculation should be 4.26 for LS and 4.4 GSR

 

You could shift between gears and see what gear ratio the transmission has. See how many turns of the input shaft it takes to spin the output once. It may take a while, but it would be easier than opening the transmission.
