Sounds like a bad bulb (it has two separate filaments, one for the brake and the other for the taillight).

Wait, so is the left brake light out, the left taillight out or are all the lights out when you brake?

In the picture, the left side (driver's side by convention) appears brighter than the right side. Is this correct? Was the brake pedal also pushed down?

no, it was just the angle at whic i took the pic, i did'nt push down on the brakes, which is what i cant figure out the lights do work they all turn on (as you can see) but when you brake they dont come on at all, and when the lights are on they dont brighten up when u brake as they should

Again, the bulb is most likely bad. Replace it.

Have you tried replacing the bulb? Your tests show that only the left brake light does not work and that all taillights do. Have you checked whether there is battery voltage at the brake light terminal inside the left bulb receptacle when the brake pedal is held down?

The filament doesn't need to be broken and the light bulb doesn't need to look dark in order for the bulb to be bad. It's similar to a fuse in that the item doesn't have to look bad in order to be bad, even if they usually look broken.

One filament can go bad in a two filament bulb (which means only one of the ways it lights will stop working).
