Default Camgear question

Besides them looking cool what do camgears do aftermarket ones that is. I don't understand the whole adjustable part of it you put the belt on and thats it I thought? I see they have alun keys to adjust but I don't understand the whole theory of them besides looking pretty under the hood. Could someone please explain

no they are adjustable so when you tune ur car u can adjust your timing either advancing it more or retarding it in more smaller and precise increments

The adjustable gears are really used in cases where you have setups that weren't designed at the factory. Such as LS/Vtec or if you've had your block decked and head resurfaced, etc. In these situations the cam timing is going to be slightly off from factory since the head and of course the cams are now essentially in a different location, but you're still using a timing belt designed for a factory engine. So you may have to move them around to get that set right. Or if you're a tuner type, advancing the cams makes better low end power at the expense of high end and retarding does the opposite. I may be wrong on that but I'm pretty sure.

its alot about valve lapse and cam lobe angle, adj cam gears will alow you to find that happy median valve lapse to increase torque, plus as said above when you mill your head it will advance the factory timing, theres a formula for it something like .15 of milling equals 1 degree advance ment, therefore you will need to retard your timing one degree, let me add, i may have this backwards, i am hitting my 13th hour of working and i am dislexic, so ya wanna double check my info. but i knowits one way or the other. you just need to find what works with your tune, engine and set-up, like they will tell you typically you advance the intake and retard the timing, but thats not always the case. you really just need to get it on the dyno and play with it, but if you go with a good camgear, skunk2 i.e. it wil also reduce rotational mass from the stock cam gears, same as in the crank pully, the lighter the rotating mass is , the easier it is to turn thus allowing more hp to the wheels.
