replacing cap and rotor in 2000 si
when trying to replace the rotor i was told there is a set screw when turn over the ignition i do not see one at all. I have done this for 20 min and i never see a set screw. Is it possible that mine does not have one and it just slips on? can someoen please help?
ur just supposed to crank the engine a little bit at a time, then look for the screw on the rotor. Look on the shaft of the rotor. You will be able to fit a screwdriver to loosen it.
there is one, if you cant turn it over and find it , just mark where your timing is, pull off the 3 bolts and take off the distrib, then change your rotor. then put everything back together.
thats what i did for abut 20 min was crank it a little at a time and i still never saw a screw..just to make sure i was not ray i got a friend to llk at it while i cranked it and he never saw it either.......and if i take the whole thing off do i only have to mar the timing on the top bolt?
Do you have the plastic cover still on? The one you see after you remove the cap? If so, it will look like:

and its purpose is to "keep dust particles out of the distributor" though the cap seems to handle that task fine. Underneath that, there will be a phillips head screw on the shaft of the rotor button, that you will need to remove it carefully (or it will self destruct and become useless).

the dudes hand is covering the spot where the screw goes. its where the shaft is. basiclly locks the rotor to the shaft.

While we are on cap and rotor replacement, Why does only the Honda rotor have that material on the contact point? If you buy a pep boys, autozone etc etc, there is no material.
i still have the plastic cover on like the pic. and on the plastic cover you can see a slit where you can stick a screwdriver in but again as i tur the crank i do not see a set screw at all..If i take the whole distr off do i just have to mark the timing on the top bolt or on all 3 and also do i have to replace the "O" ring when i take it off or can i just use the one that is on there?
Easiest thing to do at this point is going to be to get a 3/8 drive ratchet, a short extension, and a 12mm socket and take your distributor off. Once its in your hand, you should have a better viewpoint of the screw. You can also turn the rotor button slowly by hand and you should see the screw. Depending on the space on the left (passenger) side of your engine bay you should be able to lean in and see it.
when taking the distrbutor off do i just need to mark the top 12mm bolt to make sure i put it back in the correct timing or do i need to mark all of them
just so everyone knows i was able to get the rotor and it did not have a set screw in it..it just pulled right off... thanks everyone for your help though
thanks again..but now to add to the frustration my car wont start and if it does when i hit the gas it bogs down real bad and almost cuts off...any ideas now...i have done plugs wires and coil...before replacing the coil i could atleast drive my car now when i hit the gas it bogs down to much to even move it
thats what im going to do..the rotor that was on my car did not have a screw must have been a cheap one...plus it has a lot of play to it now...so im gonna get one from honda with a new screw and see how that works
