can i literally drop my engine? with no hoist/
hey guys got a 91 crx...was wondering if i put a jack under the engine and tranny if i can disconnect everything and then lower the engine to the ground and then lift the rest of the car over it.. saw this done in a video online..wondering if anyone has heard or can provide some clarification for me..
thanks

You must certainly can, just make sure your jack can hold the weight and its weight balanced centered for the engine. That idea isn't as stupid as ones I've heard from other people. I.e. Using tree limps and a rope to hold their engine while they drop the car. And they only get dumber.

Lol I can imagine someone throwing a chain over a tree limb, and then pulling the engine up only to have the limb snap and the engine and tree fall on the car.
I don't even put a jack under the engine, I just drop the frame to the ground lower the mounts until there is six inches or so to go, put some cardboard to cushion it and then it's BOMBS AWAY! Now putting it back in without jacking the drivetrain up, that there takes skill.

Dr latino has the other super ghetto way to do it. Go ahead but the dumber you do it the more likely some bullshit is gonna brake. Do it right the first time and you won't have to worry about it again.
I just lowered car to ground, unbolt engine, raise it back up. Now to get new one in, My dad had this big post and tied a rope to it and lifted haha
I do motor swaps from the bottom all the time, its pretty easy.I use a little engine dolly and lower the car on it and unbolt the engine.I then raise the car up and roll out the engine and tranny.you can see it in my build thread.https://honda-tech.com/forums/appearance-build-threads-122/brayzies-ef9-build-2732653/
It's not the super ghetto way, its the quickest way. I can pull the engine out and never have to worry about lifting anything but the chassis. I'd rather move the chassis around a stationary body than move said stationary body from a hoist. If you are dumb so "bullshit" will break, but it has served me well for 7 years of swaps now.
Haha, you said yourself it's "Bombs away!" Sounds pretty ghetto fabulous to me. I'm sure it's worked for you, as long as you did it carefully enough and didn't go bombing it it should work fine. I just don't want to give people the idea of going ghetto style as their main option.
if u can find a way to get ur car high enough without a hoist u can do it but id recommend the hoist even with the hoist its still easier to drop it from the bottom
why do u think its easier to work with a lift? u drop the engine onto some old tires and lift the car off the engine. idk call me crazy but what do i know i only work as a tech at a honda dealership
I prefer taking the motor out through the bottom, reduces your chances of damaging your nicely painted engine bay.you just need 2 jacks at the min and a little dolly to set the motor on and your good to go.I can get a engine out in a little over a hour.
I haven’t done this with a Honda but I once owned an Autobianchi A112 (Italy’s answer to the vintage Mini Cooper). Imagine a super tight engine bay. With the hood off I placed a 4X4 across the strut towers – wrapped 2 tie down straps around the engine/trany combo (at opposite ends) and gently let-er down. Not the best way but worked pretty well for me.
what do i need to detach for the removal... obviously all the wires and lines from chasis to engine.. but what about getting the axles off and such, i havent done that before.. very mechanically inclined.. just need to wrong what needs to come off to drop this thing out the bottom
theres like 2 plugs from chasis to engine lol.
drain the tranny, engine, rad, pop axles out, I take off IM so it's easier, pound the btch pin out from shift linkage, then unbolt mounts and drop it
