Default How do I remove the front dust shields?

I intended to do that today, but when I couldn't figure out how. Do I have to remove the hub, or do I just hack away at them with tin snips?

TIA

You need to remove the hub, which requires ends up destroying the wheel bearing in the process ($60). Basically, it is not worth taking out unless you really need to. Did you get bigger brakes or something? If you really want to do it, cut them off.

snip them off....then once they are off you can remove the screws that hold them n place by twisting them out....it's a hack job....but you only end up hacking on the shield

actually, you can remove the screws first with some pliers. then snip just a small section of the shield out... and slide off the hub. can then be re-used if you 'really' care to.

Ben, we snipped Jeff's dust shields off the other week. Frankly, I didn't notice any "extra" brake dust from when I removed my shields. The only thing the dust shields do really well is reflect heat back on the brakes.

yeah, pull the rotor off, snip the shields and pitch 'em, they're worthless. couldn't hurt, might help.

I removed mine when I replaced the rotors. Used a pair of vice-grips to get the screws out, then a dremmel to take a chunk out of the shield and remove them.

I suppose they keep dust off the boot, but they also keep heat from radiating to nearby components, like the plastic jacket on the abs sensor wires. Someone posted some pics of some melted parts not too long ago, but that was in race conditions.

Here's a pic of where you make the cut. I used a dremel, or tin snips would work too.

Added cooling. Loose some weight. No biggie.
