Buying an out-of-state ITR
Hey, I'm about to pick up a Type R this coming weekend and was wondering if there was something i should know such as tips or maybe paper work that needs to be filled out or special paper work that need to be done. I'm headed off to Washington and bringing it back to California. So any info would be greatly appreciated.
It depends on what your DMV requires to register it.
I've always purchased all of my cars out of state and I refuse to drive home on bogus plates. the large majority of the time I work a deal out with the seller that I drive home on their plates and to give me a day to get to the DMV to get my own plates. Only once (due to a paranoid buyer) did I purchase the car sight unseen and have him fedex me the title and get plates for it before I've ever seen it (this was on my black 01, he was a pain)

where I am from, you are not supposed to give the buyer the plates, they are responsible for getting a temporary tag or using their own plates, so dont always think the seller will let you use their plates...
Correct, it takes a certain level of trust, I've done it for cars I've sold as well. I've always fired up my insurance policy prior to signing it over. Either way it takes an act of god to get a temporary NC plate, and riding on dirty plates is plain stupid.
Usually, the title acts as it's own plate/bill of sale, and thus you are fully legally allowed to drive on the title for up to a month. I've done it numerous times.
Drive the car home unplated. If pulled over, show him the signed over title with the date of purchase on it.

DON'T forget about insurance. Add it to your policy now before you head up to WA and whether you drive it or trailer it, you should be covered.
I'm going to be in the same position as Rene1123. I've been told that some states issue a "trip permit" which is a temporary registration good for a limited number of days. This way you have legit "plates" on the car. This plus the insurance car should be all you need.
Rene1123, as itrSteez says, NC may be one of those states where you cannot get a temp tag. Ask the seller to give you a hand or you can search the WA DMV yourself and see what it says about temporary registration.
Good luck!

I've driven two cars back to Chicago across multiple states. In both cases, I've had the title and a separate bill of sale as a backup. I recommend using your old plates just to avoid attracting too much attention. You may be liable for "highway use tax" but this is a little difficult to do unless you're buying a car M-F 9-5. I've always gone to the DMV and got a temporary registration (window sticker) when purchasing from out of state...shoot, even in-state as some people keep their plates. Calling insurance ahead of time is good too. Bill of sale is also key. One for each party. Don't forget the title
dont drive home unplated. worst advice, cops will pull you and impound it. I did it and i got lucky. just go to the local town hall and get some temp tags
I live in WA and what you can do is buy a temporary registration which is also known as a travel pass. It's a green piece of paper that you put in your rear window. Basically for $35 (I still believe it's this price) you can drive without a plate for 3 days.
If you have that, insurance and a bill of sale you'll be fine.

You could easily call the state DMV in which you are purchasing the car and find out what is needed to get a legal plate to drive home with. I just found out that in Ohio all you need is the signed over title and your driver's license from your state and they will issue a temporary plate.
