Default How to Achieve a Durable Paint Job?

My local auto paint shop mixed me up some Roma Red in a spray can for $30 bucks, had to buy a few cans but I did my front and rear lip, as well as my grille.

I bought Duplicolor Automotive Grade clear coat and did a few coats and wet sanded and buffed, looked really nice.

A month later, stone chips, or more like sand blasted.. Awful, there is no durability to my paint job my stock front bumper has been on for 10 years of abuse and doesnt have a single stone chip. The type of paint on the bumper takes abuse without chipping, just marks up..

Anybody have a solution for me?

Thanks.

Use a plastic adhesion promoter on the lips? Use a rubberized primer? If not, that could be why the paint isn't durable.

Don't mix paint brands either! make sure the basecoat and clearcoat are the same brand. You could also use that 3m paint protector film.

differnt brands dont matter. If the clear coat is chipping, its because your clear isnt good enough. (spray can clear= not so good) Clearcoat should have a hardner mixed in with it, which is why it is easy to chip. If the color is chipping off also, most likely its because it wasnt prepped very well.

Seems the stone chipped areas are grey (Primer stayed, paint did not..)

What do you mean different brands don't matter? You aren't supposed to use different brands when painting for various reasons.

Let me rephrase.. Im not sure about rattle can paint jobs, but when spraying automotive paintt out of a spray gun, different brands do not matter. For example, I spray nason 2k filler. i use anything from dupont, sherwinn wiliams, or r & M color, and I generally stick with sherwinn clear. I never have a problem with adhesion, lifting, solvent pop, or anything.

As far as your lip, it seems as though the primer wasnt prepped correctly. You need to sand the color off, you can use 320 grit, and respray the red. let it flash for 15 or 20 minutes, and then clear it.

I would say the prep work is to blame but that's just my opinion. I would try exactly what tegra1027 said in the last part above my post.
