Default Civic Tune-up questions

I have an 05 civic ex with a manual transmission. Bought the car 2 years ago with 55,000 miles and now the car has 128,000 miles. I do a ton of driving and i've only changed the oil once every 5,000 miles and changed the air filter twice now.

The car has been too good for me and i've never had a problem with it at all. I feel like its past due on the timing belt/water pump replacement so I am going to have that done asap. But also the transmission really needs new fluid and the spark plugs replaced. What would you guys recommend for the type of plugs and fluid to use? Just go oem or what other reliable option is there to use? The car is completely stock except the cold air intake but i do not plan on modding it.

Any other things you can think of that i should replace please let me know.

Older Honds you can get away with using motor oil, newer Honda's I'd go straight for Honda MTF or GM Syncromesh.

I'd do a valve cover gasket kit as well as a cam seal replacement while you are doing the T-Belt. Check the tensioners and pulleys as well.

I'm using the "oem" NGK PZFR6f-11 plugs, but others have used the NGK V-Power and G-Power plugs. They're much less expensive than the "oem" plugs, but I prefer to go by the book.
As for fluid, I've been using Honda MTF. There's really no need to use anything else.

Older Hondas' owners manuals say you can use motor oil for the manual transmission, but this was before motor oil chemistry changed. Motor oils now have less of zinc content. This helps the catalytic converter last longer. But it also means that the motor oil is not as good under "extreme pressure" conditions like those the transmission sees. Hence the change in Honda owners manuals under the MTF section. Motor oil is no longer recommended for the manual transmission except maybe as a short term fix. For more information, see http://sites.google.com/site/hondali...ualtrannyfluid.

Besides last I checked the Honda OEM MTF costs about the same as motor oil, because the Honda OEM MTF lasts longer.
