I've never done it before, but since it seems so popular in the VW scene I figure that's a good place to look.

Looks like it's frowned upon by many in the VW world too.

According to some in those VW threads, you're going to want to be very careful because this will cause rusty runs down your other panels, like your front bumper and fenders and headlights. I doubt you could prevent it, but if you keep up on detailing those parts you might be able to save them from damage.

The guy in the second thread actually ended up not liking it btw. But he only spent $30 on the hood.

Oh, and in case those links ever go down, the suggestions were salt and peroxide and vinegar (third of each) or battery acid overnight.

One guy with a rusted hood said the rust would drip off and stain his grille all the time.

OP, i'm not trying to be a jerk, but I'm honestly asking why you'd be rusting the hood. I've never heard of purposely doing this and I am curious.

It's just a current trend some people are doing. I believe it started in the V Dub world, like NOFX said.

How about trying to find a way to paint the hood so that it looks like rust, but isn't? Then you could get the look without destroying a good hood.

I believe you have all right to do as you wish with your car, I'm just trying to offer a suggestion that may be a little better.

but wouldn't that more quickly spread rust to the rest of your car, tear away at the hood, and harm the structural integrity of the car. I mean, I wouldn't want to rear end somebody with a rusted *** hood.

You can get a simulated rust paint job, but it's expensive.

Rusted hoods are one of those DIY "mods" that you would normally see on a car with spray painted wheels and washers propping up the rear of the hood. It's a cheap thing to make the car look different than it originally did. Kind of the cheap version of a carbon fiber hood since an entire panel changes.

There was another thread about the same thing within the past couple days. I posted some pics of a simulated rust paint job there.

Good find. I get the whole rusting thing. It can actually look pretty badass when used the right way like all around the car. Love seeing it on street rods and some other old school cars like V-dubs and such.

I actually really liked the "EG" civic in the third picture posted by JDM SOHC in that thread you posted NOFX. Just has that beaten look to it that kinda looks mean. That's pretty original and I would totally rock that. Guess it appeals to the side of me that loves the sleeper look. But that's about it... Here it is.

I really don't get the simulated rust type thing that the OP is looking at. Especially when it's just on the hood and/or trunk. Doesn't look natural at all and just sounds like a pain.

Just my opinion. Do what you want, but I say go for a truer old school look and make it somewhat realistic.

Coincidently, a few bags of douche will give the results you're looking for.

If people are wanting to go for this rusted look then perhaps they could trade cars with people in the Midwest, who are often looking for the non-rusted look.

Damn, a few months ago I could have traded my car! Too bad I went and did something stupid like fix the rust and re-paint the car!

Looks like the rust could look cool. Good luck with what you do and post some pictures when you're done!

Hey you're still posting around in the tech forums, good to see. Informative Amy is informative. I've personally never understood that, "i want my car to be different just like everybody else" thing but hey, to each his own.

I think that picture looks like a disgusting piece of junk. I see that it's not rusted all the way through which I assume is the idea. That's slightly safer though I imagine it's impossible to stop it from spreading. I suppose on the good side, you never have to wash your car if you go with that look.

wanna rust it overnight?

take the hood off and wipe it down with aircraft stripper.

after an hour clean the hood. should be bare metal now. coat the hood in salt water. and in the morning it will be rusty.
