Default 2000 Honda Accord LX SRS Light

Me and my girlfriend purchased a 2000 Honda Accord LX sedan with a salvaged title. Its a V6 with 153,000 miles on it, but the guy that sold it said it really has 100,000 because it changed after he switched instrument panels. Not sure if I believe it or not, the original instrument panel was broken. To the point, when we bought it the SRS light was on so I took it to the dealership and got it checked out. The code came up with a default in the OPDS sensor and told us it will cost around $400 to fix it. That price seems ridiculous for a sensor in a seat to be replaced and with both of us paying for college, its hard to dish out alot of money. I've never took it to a dealership, always to the same local mechanic. I'm curious if I could buy the sensor and replace it myself or take it to my local mechanic and have them replace it? If so, how much would the sensor cost and where can I find it?

It is possible that dealer does not know about the Technical Service Bulletin for the OPDS. HONDA sent accord owners, like myself, notice that the OPDS could be bad. The diagnostic would be free and if there was any problems it would be corrected FREE OF CHARGE.

heres the link below. On the left hand side of the page you want
Service Bulletins. Run thru the menu selections for your vehicle. You will see a list of categories for the components. you want to select:
AIRBAGS: FRONTAL, SENSOR CONTROL MODULE

Sweet, thanks for the help WHEELMAN. I'll confront them about it later this week and let you know what happens. I really appreciate it.

Quick question though, are OPDS sensors only on passenger seat? Or are they on the driver seat also. I'm figuring it's only on the passenger seat, but I just want to make sure.

I found that the sensor is only on the passenger seat.

Also, I went to the dealership and they said that there was an extended warranty, 10 years/150,000 miles on the faulty OPDS sensors. So were out of the picture. Wheres a reliable site that I can buy the sensor from and get it put in at a local mechanic, or by myself?
