HELP Detonation!!! OWNED
Hi, ok please analyze this for me and give me your opinioin.
My ITR is detonating under load, say if the engine drops below 3000 rpm
The car stutters and falls on its face and pings like a son of a byatch.
This problem didnt start until I drove the car from Canada to Florida.
In the process of troubleshooting i tried leaning the car out and it made the problem worse which i anticipated. So i pumped up the fuel pressure (have aem regulator) to 40 psi which is VERY HIGH I know but it is helping.
Now the car isnt pinging as bad but it still does it when it gets above 85 degrees
out and humid which is like every other day here.
Oh also the car cranks and cranks and takes forever to start.
Now when i was at home in Canada when the temperature would go below
4 degrees the car would misfire (until the car warmed up) so i got a block heater to keep it warm and it worked out fine. could it be related?
By the way ive been a member of this board forever just started a new
account because im here in FL

What mods do you have?
Also just wondering, what is your old sn?
40 psi not at wide open throttle is high!
our cars are supposed to run at 31 psi or at least they are where im from.
I leaned the car out to see if the pinging would get worse which it did,
which makes me think it is fuel related. I also thought maybe that the engine
was flooding at first before i heard the popcorn sounds.
So leaning it out would make sense. Regardless it led me to where i am now.
The engine is running a lot better but its still misfiring when the temps and humidity outside get high.
my old nick is ITR779

oh and one other variable i forgot to mention.
I got rid of my fireball muffler and b pipe to drive down here because it would be
way too loud on the highway. I put a muffler on off a civic si im not sure what year it was a last minute job at the local mufflerman. Just to quiet the car down and it worked. do you think with all the air going in plus the header and free flow cat
then squeezed down to a restrictive muffler may have something to do with this?

To check fuel pressure you REMOVE THE VACUUM LINE FROM THE REGULATOR!!!!!
With that said... fuel pressure should be around 50psi.
Check your cap/rotor/plug, and your fuel filter, you may likely just need a tune up.
You are also choking on your exhaust, try to source a ITR stock exhaust locally.
Also try resetting the ECU, so it'll "adopt to the FL climate".

What a/f ratio's are you running at the rpm's where you hear detonation? What is your base timing and rate of retard? What kind of boost are you running? Is your intercooler working properly? It would help to diagnose the detonation on a dyno so you can track some of these variables.
UHh. gas filter might have taken a shot of dirt, since your saying its fuel related...
and I have not seen a reply, DID you check your ign system yet?
How about your air intake is it clear and working?
Also what are your mods???

Its an msd ignition sci with external coil, ractive plug wires, ngk plugs,
and msd distributor cap. It all looks A ok.

Sorry I didnt reply back earlier but honda-tech only lets trial users
post 5 messages in 24 hours. I backed the timing off about 4 degrees
and bumped the fuel pressure up and added octane boost got rid of the pinging.
That was a bandaid fix. Found out what the real problem was when I
tested for spark at night.
Coil was arcing to my intake tube so i moved the tube car runs like a champ now.
Thanks for your help everyone.
