Default rusty hood brown color

So i rusted my hood. I tried the salt and vinegar and it started to work slowly. I washed it off and used bleach and it rusted much fast. It is tanish, however, you can still notice the gray. How can i make it all rusted (brownish). do i just wait over time? or should i douse it bleach one more time and let it sit for a couple more days? i only doused it and left it out for a day with the bleach. thanks

Wtf... If you're gonna do that to a hood, I have one that's already rusting on it's own I'd love to trade you for a good, clean one...

Does it just keep rusting or is there a way to keep the rust from going all the way through? Either way... Kinda stupid if you ask me...It's hard enough to find parts that aren't naturally rusted, but now I have to try and find stuff against people doing it on purpose?

I don't understand this trend if only based upon the idea that I know if I had such a part I would have to touch it at some point. I don't like the feel of rust. *shudder*

If you really feel so inclined to rust your hood and want it done faster, then I'd suggest you keep doing the bleach thing or check VW forums for more ideas on speeding things up. I mean, this is supposed to be a trend they started.

If you wipe bare steel down with hydrochloric (muriatic) acid, available at home centers for adjusting the pH in pools and cleaning masonry, it will develop surface rust pretty quick.

Instead of making the hood actually rust, maybe there's a way to paint the hood to give it that effect without actually making it rust. Then you can always go back when you realize it's a silly fad.

Not sure about paint, but there is definitely a powder coating color.

I've seen vintage cars made to look like they have rust, but it's just paint. Pricey, pricey paint jobs.

Unfortunately the people who usually purposefully rust their hoods and other parts don't have the type of cash it would take to get a professionally painted replicated rust piece.

This is simulated rust:

I did this on my 92 sedan. First I sanded down the hood with 60 grit on my palm sander. Next I sprayed on vinegar (etches the metal) waited until it dried. Then i sprayed on a mixture of salt water and hydrogen peroxide. It immediatly started to turn orange, dried overnight and it was a surface layer of dry rust. I think it looks pretty cool and it gives people something to whine about!

i think this trend is absolutely retarded, honestly, but its your thing man go with it. id like to say though if you dont wanna get a nice rusty brown hand or stain up some shirts and pants everytime you touch your hood or bump into it, throw some spray clear over it after youve reached your desired rusty look. i gotta say Vdubs do this one better though, pics of what youre workin with so far?
