Default looking for some opinions

so i bought my first civic after going with a buddy to dyno his and being absoluetly amazed with it and always wanting one since i was a kid i just finally found one and broke the piggy bank open to get it but anyway its a 97 dx coupe with a d16y7 non vtec that i wanna build but not an extreme just to become familiar with the honda motors to an extent, the same guy that got me hooked has a b18c5 block that had a vtec head on it but now needs a head an oil pump and a water pump for $500 my questions are do i just sink the money into this swap or should i play with the motor thats in there for a bit?...do i need another vtec head for this block and does it have to be off a b18?...what do you guys think about the ebay turbo kits?

Welcome to Hondas! Just to warn you, people on here are going to criticize you for not doing much research. You can't put a B18 head or any b series head on your Y7. Basically, there are a few series of motors that are popular in our cars.

The D series: what you already have stock. These motors came in most Civics in our years (excluding the 99-00 Si). They are great for fuel economy and can make good power with forced induction. You could get a SOHC vtec head from a D16Y8 or D16Z6 and put that on your current motor. I never really thought it was worth it.

The B series: these are the most popular motors to swap into our cars. They are all DOHC. Many variants were found in Civics and Integras in the 90's. They range from 1.6 to 2 liters, some with vtec. They are pretty direct swaps to perform.

The H series: these motors have more displacement and power, but are less popular due to being a little bit heavier and hurting the weight distribution of you car.

The K series: a newer engine found in the RSX, 02 and up Civic Si. 2.0 or 2.4 liters, expensive but great engines if you can afford them.

That's a little overview. Now that you know a bit of the basics, research, research, research. Check out build threads on here and google things about these motors and Hondas. Check out the FAQs. Good luck!

stay away from ebay turbo kits if you can... your gonna spend more money replacing all the cheap **** thats breaks on you

If you can pick up a b18c5 block and head for 500 bucks that to me is a good deal

There are good turbo kits for the d series but i would defiently reccomend building the engine or just low boost

I swapped in a b16 in my ek and love it over the d series it had in it.

You got a B18C5 for $500?

Yeah, do that. Toss the y7.

Expect to spend at least another $500 for the rest of the parts that you'll need for the swap.... mounts, axles, ecu, etc.

lol he didnt get the b18 for $500 yet, hes asking if he should, but its just block, no head, oil or water pump.

Id say do whats called a mini me, and get a vtec head from a d16z6/d16y8 and put on your block, then look into vitara pistons, and boost the heck outta it!
