Post My 1990 Civic Hatch Si has been involved in an accident

Honda Tech lovers,

Both my babies (My wife and my car) were involved in a head on collision two weeks ago. My wife may have some neck/spin injuries as she hit her head on the roof of the car when a lady turned in front of her causing the accident. My wife is alive, my car....not so much.

Here is the situation on the car which is why I'm posting here to get an opinion on how to settle with the insurance company on what the car is worth.....So I'm turning to the all knowing Honda Tech followers. Especially the EF crowd.

This has been by project when I bought it four years ago. I had a DX model going through college and drove the **** out of it but had to sell when I moved to CA for a job.

I immediately put on 15" Konig Heliums and Kumho Ecstas 195/55/15s to keep the stock gearing on the speedo. The car still felt a bit loose so I invested in Forum Function FII suspension and a full polyurethane kit.
I found rear disc brakes from a '91 CRX in a wrecking yard and just managed to get them on just a month or so ago.

Of course no civic would be complete without an intake and header. I have an Iceman intake and a California B.A.R.'d DC header. I also put on a Gates Racing timing belt and a water pump not long ago. I also replaced the clutch with an ACT road racing clutch disc and the input bearing on the tranny within 10K miles(thanks to Honda Tech write up!!!!)

The interior is almost immaculate with just the normal wear spot on the drivers side torso. The back seats look like no one has ever sat in them. I even have the stock rear cover unit I see on eBay these days for like $150!
The paint is starting to fade, its red. Otherwise the exterior is in pretty good shape.

I have a Y8 intake manifold to put on and was planning on doing a B-swap so happened on a LSD B series tranny in the bay area for a good deal thinking I was going to go that way eventually.

The car now has pretty major hood damage. Both upper and lower cross members are bent and the radiator is bend really bad (but not leaking!!!!). The front bumper is toast too of course and is pushed a little into the passengers side wheel well. Otherwise the car is drivable. Currently the car is at the body shop waiting insurance to find out if they are going to total or repair. So far they're at $2100, so they're going to total the car. I haven't been able to find a like car anywhere on Craigslist. Based on the vintage and model of the car, does anyone have an idea what it may be worth given the list and condition described above?

Here is my ultimate question, is there a bumper bracket that can be replaced which will is supposed to bend in this type of situation or is the bumper connected directly to the frame at which point, and what the body shop was telling me, they would have to cut out a new section and replace what could potentially be bent? I wish I had the car in my driveway to look but its at the shop...

In the end, I'd like the car back, but I think a replacement car with airbags may be in order....

Thank you so much for reading a I really appreciate the feedback.

I would advise you to buy a non death-trap car. It doesn't sound like you have too much money into it. Be happy that your wife and kid are okay and move on.

Sorry to hear about it though. Losing a loved one always sucks.

just gonna need fenders hood and bumper and frame straightening and an alignment afterwards

gonna run say 3 grand

you can tell if the frame is tweeked or not when you try to install new panels and **** doesnt line up right, sorry man but that is an expensive process, they charge a few hundred dollars just to put it on the machine, plus like 80 bucks per hour

Sadly, this statement indicates that she was most likely not wearing a seatbelt.

I hope your wife recovers. Cars are replaceable.

I am the one who moved this thread.

I moved it because (as you might be able to tell from where the posts were already starting to go) I felt the poster would get better help in a tech forum than he would get in GDD.

OP, you should have the option to buy the car back. If the financial analysis is favorable, do so.

I respectfully dissent from the notion that we should be using cages in street cars. I believe that in most cases you cause more problems than you solve.

I got a check for $1200 from Geico after opting to buy the car back for $250. Initially the ins offered $800 but I talked politely to the adjuster and I asked what can be done as I felt that this was not the value of the car. He said if I can provide comaprable listings in the area showing other similar car, he would review and "adjust" the check.

Sold the car for $300

Frame on this is tweaked at the driver door and frame.

Short story: you wont get all your money back for the parts and car unless you get creative and buy the car back, sell the parts or install in another.

Good call on moving this thread. We treat our own kind right here. (other than some normal family bantering)
