H22A: How do I tell what year?
Hello all;
I bought a H22A from a gent a year back, (it only says H22A on the block without any numbers afterwards, so its an engine from Japan.) He had it swapped into a 93 Accord.
What I am curious about is how do I tell what gen of H22A I have? I did a bit of research, and I know the ones with the red covers push 217 hp, but mine has a black top so its 197. Its either from a 4th gen prelude SI, 5th gen prelude SIR, or the Accord SIRs. There is also a few numbers to go by underneath the H22A on the block, would that help me with anything? How do I find the year of car this engine is from?

If you look on the front of the head (above the exhaust manifold) there should be a couple of stamps. One has the year.
Furthermore, post the serial number that appears below the block stamp. I can tell you roughly what it means.

if it has a head then its easy to tell. If not, its nearly impossible. The numbers below them are the serial number, but the info for decoding that isn't readily available, and the dealer probably will not help you. If it was a 97-01 block it should have a green plate with the vehicles VIN on it, near the oil filter on the back of the block.
91-96 castings won't have that, and will only have the serial. The heads have stamps with all of that pertinent information though. But honestly none of it is really relevant. If it has sensors on the oil pump its OBDII and probably a 97-01 55mm main block. If its OBDI then its most likely a 50mm main block. All other things are irrelevant.
