Default D Series Hydro Vs Cable Pressure Plate

I've searched several times in regards to figuring this out.

Is the engagement of the two difference pressure plates different? I picked up a D16z6 with an aftermarket flywheel/clutch/pressure plate on it. Slapped it together with a stock cable tranny and it wont go into gear.

Car will start in gear. Car will start in neutral. Car will not come out of either while engine is running.

Transmission is bought used, and honestly untested, but there is no abnormal noise coming from the gearbox.

Linkage is stock with shortthrow on it. Stabilizer was added (auto to manual) but seems to be in the right place and there isnt any binding going through the gears with the car off.

I pulled it apart yesterday before work and everything seems to be in the right place. The only thing i can come up with is that the throwout bearing isnt engaging properly. Perhaps the pressuer plates have a different height (or thickness depending on how you look at it)

I searched the following
pressure plate difference (ef/eg/tranny forums)
cable hydro plate (same 3)
throw out engagement (same 3)
and came up empty.

Thanks in advance

additionally I've since checked the pressure plate on the tranny and the splines are fine.
to me it feels as if the the pressure plate simply isnt working. I believe the engaged height of the pressure plate is not making full contact with the cover.

If i dont get a good resolution, ill try to get pics and measurements of hydro vs cable throwout bearing heights this weekend.
