Default 91 hatch cel and No power

Hi all i just wanted to start by saying hi thank you for this forum i have lurked here for sometime this is the first time i had to post anything. I have a 91 Hatch 1.5 non vtech with a 4 speed manual, yesterday driving home the CEL came on and the car started running like crap it idles ok but when you try to move it rev really slow and cuts out at 3k. when i got home i turned it off jumped the connector under the dash and there where no codes took it for a spin around the block and it was fine. today i was driving to work when i got about half way there it did it again so i just turned it off and back on and it was fine no codes. it has done it to me a few times today the cel comes on when the motors warm and stopped a lights or stop signs. i'm lost what do i do now.

Thank you
Tom

what ECU do you have? - the OBD0 ECUs don't require you to jumper the connector under the dash - just look at the top of the ECU and the red LED will be flashing - count the number of times it flashes between pauses and that is the code or codes - the codes will remain in the ECU until you physically reset the ECU by disconnecting the battery or pulling the hazard/ECU fuse in the underhood fusebox

ok i think it's a code 8 the for TDC - top dead centre sensor. but it could be code 17 VSS - speed sensor which sounds more logical to every one.

Thank you

since the OBD0 D-series ECUs only have short flashes and not a combination of long and short flashes, if it is flashing 8 times, pausing, flashing 8 times, etc. it has to be a code 8, which causes it to go into limp mode - this usually means time to replace the distributor

if it was a code 17, it would be flashing 17 times
