how to remove spray paint on a car?
BRAKE CLEANER there was a bunch of overspray in my engine bay, and a lot of brake cleaner and scrub hard. There may be a small amount of color from your actual paint that gets on the towel but dont worry about it. my paint didnt dull at all.
whatever you do dont listen to the above , use a clay bar it will remove the over spary of spray paint without removing your paint
are you kidding me? get the fvck out of here ive DONE it MULTIPLE times with no damage to the paint. SOOO dont say **** when you have never done it.
Clay bar lol that will NOT do ****, jesus

Most likely the original paint will be sanded somewhat, leaving it needing to be touched up. Just get some Aircraft Remover from auto-zone, or some place similar. It will take off everything except for the factory primer, which is a very good start to build up from.
Wow aircraft remover will strip it to bare metal! So don't use it. My car was stolen a couple of years ago and they decided to spray paint the side of the car. I used acetone from home depot and put it on a rag and wiped the spray paint right off. It didn't dull or damage the original paint either
sure-thing paint pro your gonna ruin his paint, brake cleaner is too harsh , just because you use it dosent mean its a good idea for everyone else , as far as me gtfo i wont ethug . brake cleaner= brakes you dump ****

Thinner will work too. Just be cautious with it. Deffinately dont leave it on their soaking, because it will soften the original clear that way. Also FYI if the actual paint is coming off on the towl/rag then your car "A" doesnt have a clear coat and is a single stage paint job, or "B" you rubbed through your clear.
Ok first off all in extreme cases your paint might rub off a little on the towel with brake cleaner, If you have spray paint over your original paint your already up **** creek. Brake cleaner isnt just for brakes dumb ***, lol.
Whatever im just trying to help the OP I did my entire engine bay and it looks amazing so, I guess the OP will have to deciede for himself.
Clay bar will still do absolutly nothing lol

I have no problem with your post, paint thinner is a good idea. Its probaly even more harsh than brake cleaner IMO.
Its the dumbass NSXTER who comes in and starts running his mouth and suggested CLAYBAR to take off spray paint.
Im just sharing my personal experiance brake cleaner did not affect my orignal paint one bit. But it took off all the spray paint that was in my bay

i had a friend that his whole block, some kids ran down the street with a spray can an sprayed a line down all the cars. believe it or not he used purell hand sanitizer. it works i guarantee it. and no damage to clear
I have heard that a clay bar can work, but the spray paint has the be fresh not been there for a while. Other than that you can use really fine sand paper and wet sand it like you would to get orange peel out. I would say the finer the better go with 2000, 2500 or if you can find 3000 grit. Just don't go too far. Then just hand or machine buff it, it might work.
Pics of the car with the spray paint would help to give the best advice and some idea of how long it has been on for also.
Anyhooo you could try rubbing compound to remove the paint,it might work but if not you might do as the poster above said and wet sand with very fine grit paper and then buff.

If you are going to use aircraft paint remover or brake cleaner, you will end up with a damaged paint, so do not do that!
One guy mentioned using thinner, and i will agree, but this isn't good on cheap paint jobs (cheap non OEM paint). Works well removing stubborn old primer overspray and other things, but you can't apply pressure or have the rag/towel dripping, it can only be somewhat "moist" with thinner. You may want to buff the area after the cleaning is done to bring back the shine.
BUT, plan "A" is always to use a clay bar, which doesn't take away the finish of the car, will pick up the over spray and other contaminants on the surface of the paint. You may need to buff the area afterwards.
Clay bar will not work if you don't know how to make it work for you. Soapy water(inside a spray bottle), clay bar and a gentle movement (without dropping the bar on the floor, or it's trashed!!) will always do the trick.

lol. i still stand by the hand sanitizer. ive seen it work great. but it was a small area. since there is alot of body talk in here,.does any one know what i can do after i polish my manual steering rack? should i clear it? it had some rust pitting before i started workin it so im afraid if i leave it overtime it will rust. im also gonna polish the rear control arms. pm me thanks
haha naw im here. ima try the hand sanitizer first just because its like dollar and for sure won't harm my paint. if that fails then ill give the clay bar a go, but that brake cleaner does seem a bit harsh :/
I resprayed my trim to flat black a year ago, missed a few small spots when I was taping it off, and clay bar and some elbow grease pulled it off just fine. Only problem with clay barring is that once you do one spot, you'll want to do your entire car, and once you clay bar, you should wax...and I know I'm not the only one here who has to go all the way once they start cleaning their car. It can easily turn into an all-day event.
