Is synthetic really better?
I just went to Wall-Mart to buy oil. Got there and saw that a 5 quart jug of Castrol GTX on sale for $7.99, I went there looking to get the Cartrol Syntec which was 4.99 a quart. My question is are the sythetic oils better than the regular oils?

Do a search in the ITR forum. There is a REALLY TECHNICAL debate, with some guys that know their **** when it coems to oils (Both synthetic and non). It might be archived now but its a great resource.

As far as specifically for hondas i dont have an answer, to new to playing with them. But a few years back a work for a company that specializes in Tribology, the study of lubricants. They do research for the air force and major oil companies with regards to greases and oils. They do heat tests, cold tests, shearing, force etc.... they test for it all. The one thing i remember from being there is they mentioned that running a synthetic like Mobil 1 is the best bet for longevity. As far as performance i have no clue, but I run it. Back then i coulda gotten the plots from tests run to prove this, but that was then.... oh well. Anyway, just my .02 from a past experience.
I run Valvoline Synthetic, I don't know whether synthetic is better than the other oil but I feel safer. Like the other guy said I've seen many debates about this and there is always different opinions.
i began using Mobil 1 in my wifes volvo nearly 200k ago..its got over 300k on the motor now and doesnt burn a drop of oil..i change the oil every 5k..and all my cars now use Mobil 1 10w-30 regardless what the factory manual recommends

I found out that if you have an old motor and the person who had it only got Pertol oil changes, if there is and bad seals the synthetic WILL find the bad seal and leak like a bitch....at least mine does
Valvoline and Mobil1 are great in both synthetic and petroleum bases.. I just used regular Mobil1 5w-30... But I also change my oil whenever I'm very bored.. No oil is in my car for over 3000, usually change every 2K or sometimes less if I've been running hard.
