New S2200 On Tin-top Form

It's fast, stylish and hi-tech - and also the car Honda said it would never design. Auto Express can exclusively reveal the firm is working flat-out on this stunning coupé, which has already hit the test track in Japan.

Sources have revealed the newcomer - known internally as the S2200 - is to be based on the S2000 roadster, but will be a fixed-head coupé. Previously, bosses had said there would never be a tin-top version of the convertible. Inspired by the innovative S800 coupé - which was built as a sister car to the classic S800 roadster - the S2200 is likely to cost around £27,000. A strict two-seater, it's set to debut as a concept at the Tokyo Motor Show late next year.

Powered by a high-revving, four-cylinder 250bhp 2.2-litre engine, the car will rival the likes of Mazda's RX-8 and the new Nissan 350Z. Speed and driveability are top of the list of priorities for Honda's top brass. And as a result, torque output will be impressive, with early indications suggesting the coupé will offer at least 235Nm.

Our insiders say adding a hard-top and glass rear window will mean the car tips the scales at about 1,320kg. However, we've been informed a sub-1,300kg figure is the goal. Despite the extra weight the metal roof will add, en- gineers still insist the car will be faster than the current S2000.
Early estimates suggest the S2200 will sprint from 0-60mph in around six seconds, and hit a top speed of more than 150mph.

Inside, the car will maintain the no-frills feel of the S2000, and include a digital dash and a starter button. Also on offer will be bucket seats, air-con and electric windows.

Wow, that's beautiful! The only thing I don't like is the rear window wiper But 250 horsies w/ 235 torque? Can't wait to see it!

These are photoshop jobs, I have seen five sets of this picture. Any time the picture angle has changed, so has the rear wiper mount.

PLEASE note, if these are spy photos and Honda won't reveal details... HOW IN THE WORLD DID THEY FIND OUT ENGINE SPECS? The stock JDM S2000 is rated at 246hp with a 2.0. I find it difficult to believe they obtained 25ft/lbs more torque with out lowering the redline. hptq*rpm)/5250. In other words, if PEAK Torque occured at 8300 (same as stock) this S2000 would be rated at 273hp. According to this torque figure this "new S2000" makes peak torque at 7300RPM. Hmmm.

The Stock S2000 accelerates the 0-60 in under six seconds and has more than a 150mph top speed.

For instance, specific to this photo:
The roof line is from a 350Z.
The rear glass/wiper is from a RX-7.
Pay close attention to the trunk lines and compare to a stock car. (ie. this picture would be a non-functional trunk)
The optional side strakes are incorrectly rendered.
The tow hook is on the wrong side, but the keyhole for the trunk is correct.
This would have to be a JDM car yet, they have US SPEC sidemarkers.

Most magazines photoshop their "future car x" pictures for obvious reasons. This magizine is just reporting, and speculating on a rumour, that to me seems quite possible. (I have a collection of old, car&driver/road&track alon with some british magazines, It is interesing to look back at their speculations, and renderings (some pre-photoshop) of cars that have since came into production.) It makes sense that honda would respond to the 350z, new rx7/8, and forthcoming toyota sports car.

Almost, while those are BBS Modulos they are five spoke. The JDM issue Modulos are six spoke in the same size/width/offset as the stock wheels.

The wheels pictured are 17" five spokes and the car has been lowered.

 

i was about to say honda went from a 2.0li w/ 240 hp to a 2.2 li w/ 250 hp engine? that dont make sense at all. knowing them, they'd squeeze out 265hp
oh well. but i do think they s2k needs an upgrade now. i love the car its just that 240 hp doesnt cut it these days, even the new accord v6has 240 hp (yes i know its not at all a sports car).
they need to make a s2400 w/ 2.4liter engine pumping out a 275hp w/ 180ft/lbs torque. and lower the wieght to 2600lbs. now thats plain orgasmic
