Default Loud engine ticking/tapping noise - Cyl #4

Any of you guys ever hear this clacking/tapping noise? I did a valve adjustment but the noise didn't change one bit. It's constant, and does not stop regardless of how long the motor's been running or even what RPM the engine is at. Interesting thing to note are my compression #s: 220, 220, 210, 260. Yes, the cylinder that's making the tapping noise has unusually high compression.

No CEL. Any ideas? I'm thinking maybe a bent valve or something.

I took this video of it.

Trust me, I'm not the one that decided on that intake I just bought the car.

Motor sounds pretty healthy other than the tapping in cylinder 4. It was a repo which was the reason for the sale.

I'd get a valve adjustment and see if that helps. Until then I wouldn't run it at all.

you need a new bottom end. your cylinder wall is scored. probably due to low oil at some point. is this an 00-mid 02? honda upgraded the oil jet bolts in mid 02.

Why would a scored cylinder wall be producing the clacking noise in the valvetrain?

maybe its the video but the clacking/knocking sounds more like a straight rod knock to me than anything else. It can't be the valve clearance as you've already performed an adjustment. A bent valve doesn't sound like that, you would of gotten a single or random cylinder misfire code by now with a bent valve/s.
The higher pitch ticking noise sounds like a timing chain slap from lack of tension. Bad timing chain tensioner- a very common problem.

^ I posted up on s2ki, he responded saying it's a scored wall. I still don't understand how that results in the metal-to-metal clacking sound (aside from the fact that the walls looked perfectly healthy when we pulled the pan.)

I still don't see how it results in a metal-to-metal noise.

Yes I know that much... but clearly I'm trying to avoid that and keep it as a last resort.

were you using a magnetic oil drain plug? just a shot in the dark also try to get some advise from inline pro. they are very knolagable and easy to talk with on the phone. the reason i suggest this is they have stupid experiance with the f20/22. ive seen them put a f20 into a bubble and convert it to fwd.lol give them a shot. again if you are on the east coast ill put you in touch with fishers machine. lots of f20 exp and very very fair pricing not to mention attention to detail and genuinly good people/family business. pm me if i can help you out.

Is the tapping noise coming from the the head just under the rocker cover above the pulleys?

If it is its just the timing chain tensioner. You can replace it with a new one but it will go the same after a while. A lot of people strip them down, sand blast them and then re-assemble them. No more noise then.

Hang on, just wrote that and then watched the vid, sounds like the bottom end knocking to me. Are you getting blue smoke from the exhaust? It may be the TCT but if its that loud I'd be very surprised that its not jumped a few teeth yet!

The noise is actually noticeably more pronounced in the video than it is in person, I guess the Canon microphone just resonates with that frequency stronger than the human ear But yes it is coming from the rear of the motor, not where the timing chain is, so I'm hesitant in blaming the TCT. There is a little bit of smoke coming from the exhaust, but that's only because it's a straight pipe - no cat.

I really don't think it's the bottom end - the noise is clearly coming from the valvetrain, and you can hear the tapping noise when cranking it without starting the motor. It almost sounds like the piston is tapping the spark plug.

I think its a sprung bearing. It happen to 2 of my ls-vtec. open up the oil pan and check if theres metal shavingin it. if so then its a sprun bearing. go on youtube and type in sprung bearing, it sounds jut like that.

As you stand in front of the car with the hood open, if its coming form the rear as in near the bulkhead/windscreen this is the opposite end of the block to where the timing chain and serpentine belt are... so you're actually on about cly #1 that you have the problem with and not #4
