Icon6 my 86 civic SI project (oh yea....B20 sleeves are very weak. lol)

Ok I've had this car for 3 years. It has been sitting for 2 years and 364 days. lol. pretty much blew up after I bought it ( i knew nothing about imports at the time, but it was a f***ing rocket). I had no many being in school and no job so it sat. I've stored this car from friends garage to other friends garage. Now I finally have money to start on it. and so far here is what happened:
I finally got the b16 head off my b20 block........yea I heard the b20 sleeves were weak but never saw any around my area (dumb@$$es in my area think 87 camaros are bad. lol. retarded redneck town.), and yea they are weak. even with a block guard it didn't help. I didnt crack one or two cylinders. I took them all out. lol. Im debatin whether to get this b18 out of the junk yard ($50 y not), putting pistons and rods in there and getting my turbo rebuilt (cheap version)...........or sending b20 to benson to sleeve it, expensive rods and pistons. but then I would have to get bigger injectors and probably get rid of my zdyne obd0 ecu. I would be very happy with a dependable 300 hp so I may go the b18 route. but anyways this is where I am. hopefully the pics load. tell me what you guys think.

B18 route sounds like the right move because of the price. What kind of kit is that? Edelbrock?

yea I was having trouble uploading pics. I will try to get more. I'm not sure if I have too many before I started tearing down, I was more worried about wrenching on it then taking pics.

EJ1 - yea I wouldn't do it either. I think I was running like 10lbs of boost. Got it like that. I wish I could get more pics for you to show you exactly how bad it was. I was thinking one cylinder would be cracked but they all are lol. I have so much metal in my oil pan its crazy. still gotta take my crank off and check to see that pistons are junk (99% sure they will be). thanx the build is no hurry cuz I've gotta get the parts together. but i'm slowly getting to it.

pwro - yea for a while there I want upwards of 450 to 500 hp, but then I started thinking that my civic is light as hell and If I went too much beyond 300 or 350 I would have to get a bigger turbo, stronger rods, bigger injector......kind of opening up more of a money pit. and plus this is my first tuner build. I can always keep my block and get it sleeved later and take my time on that one. It is also obd0 with the zdyne ecu, I've heard from some people I should swap that out and go obd1...not sure though. and I'm confused on what kit your asking about? the turbo is a (blown) 18g greddy turbo.

ok. correct me if im wrong........I'm putting the vtec head on the b18 block. getting 9:1 pistons. will the ls/vtec combo mess up the compression ratio? thanx

The fly wheels are the same, as far as the compression ratio I have no idea but I have for the most part the same 9:1 ls/v set up and would like to know aswell if anyone could help out ???

But anyhow, how much psi were you on with the original B20??

well it was a few years ago when I bought it and the engine blew right when I got it. I think I was pushing 10psi but not positive. I just got the pistons and crank out. All 4 pistons had cracks between the rings. They were shot. So in total so far I have 4 cracked cylinders and 4 cracked cylinders. lol. I got a feeling I was pushing more than 10 psi.

I pulled the pistons and rods out of my junkyard b18 and they look good. will probably sell them.
and yea I would like to make sure the compression ratio is the same as what the pistons say. Does anyone know if the rods are strong? if so I could use those but I'd rather not.

yes the flywheels are the same.

and if you have 9:1 compression pistons and a b16 head + a .30 thick cometic you will have about a 9.2:1 compression. just to give you an idea i have 9:1 compression pistons in my b20 with a b16 milled head and a .53 thick head gasket and mine is currently 8.8:1... the GsR combustion chambers are smaller than the b16's therefore upping your compression

i would use a .60 thick head gasket on yours or maybe even the same one i had. the lower the compression the more room for error

well the pistons im getting are 8.5:1 so im thinking I will be ok if I just use a regular size head gasket......correct me if im wrong. that would probably bring it close to 9:1 because of the head?
haha ricky you responded just to say nice oil pan. lol yea they look better than stock. oil plug is at a biotch of a spot though.

also would putting a block guard in my b18 even be worth it? i mean they are suppose to help the top part of the cylinder but with my experience it didn't help at all. I also want to drive my car quite a bit and those don't help with cooling. I will probably pass with the block guard for now and eventually will sleeve my b20.

Hey guys got a quick question/wanting to make sure im right.....pr3 rods came only in the b16s...right? I'm kind of confused because when I pulled everything out of my b20z I noticed the rods are pr3s. (previous owner probably swapped them). the only reason I noticed this was because my eagle rods for a b18a were a bit taller. so pretty much im asking if the pr3 rods were only in the b16?

Nice hatch! Are you a member over at RPR yet? (redpepperracing.com).

We would love to follow along with you. Post a build thread there as well. Very helpful people, and many have already done this swap very successfully.
