Hi,

I got a 97 honda civic dx, 5 speed manual transmission, base sedan model.103K miles on it. Recently, i have started to hear a rattling sound while in gear, at certain speed/RPM and when i downshift. I only hear it in 1st , 2nd and 3rd gear. I brought it to my mechanic and he told me it is a bushing/seal going bad. And that i would need a new transmission.

Has anyone has had that problem before?

Right now i am looking for a new use tranny for it. Any good place or should look or cheap shop. I found some on ebay for $400+, my mechanic can get it for $750+

Ok So i am in a dilemma right now. I took it to my usual mechanic, and he told me it was the tranny. I wanted a second opinion so i took it to AAMCO. They told me it is most likely the clutch. Confused I took it to a 3rd mechanic, they told me it is mostly likely the tranny.

here are different time when the noise happen:
Neutral clutch out (engage) at stop ~ small noise, when i clutch in (disengage) at stop no noise
Neutral clutch out (engage) rolling ~ noise; Neutral clutch in rolling ~noise until car (transmission) is at a full stop
Reverse clutch out (engage) no apparent noise

1st gear, 2nd gear, 3rd gear noise happen at certain RPM, same if i down shift.

Please help!!!
