Default Attempted to read code for check engine light now car won't start

My check engine light was on and went to AutoZone to have the code read seeing as I am 330 miles from home and a poor college student and don't want my car to break down when I'm driving back home. The guy plugged in the reader but wasn't getting a code it was just saying that it needed to be connected, he then tried to start the car with the reader still attached and it wouldn't start so he unplugged the reader and tried again and it still wouldn't start. They unplugged the battery for a couple minutes and even checked the fuse to make sure they didn't blow it but it still won't start. It started fine to drive there and the drive was at least 12-13 miles. All I want to know is what did the people at AutoZone do to my car, it started to get there fine and after they plugged in thier reader it stopped starting. It will turn over but not catch. Anyone please?
