Help me diagnose a sound my car is making...
Hi, I have a 03' Accord V6-6 with 122k.
I don't believe it's anything major, but my car makes a small scratching sound from the front driver side wheel. You really have to listen to hear it. I hear it best when I drive past cars which bounces the sound back. It occurs when I'm traveling medium speeds around the city (20-40mph). It goes away when I'm driving on the freeway. The sound does increase with speed, but not dramatically or sequentially (it reaches a maximum rhythm). The car is normal when braking.
I have visually inspected the brakes (didn't take off caliper) and there looks to be a good amount of pad left, though I couldn't really see the back pad. I had the car off the ground and tried shaking the wheel (hands @ 6 and 12 o'clock). It was firm and didn't budge at all so I don't think it's the wheel bearing.
It drives fine. I've had it up to speed with no vibration at all. I will be taking the caliper off for a thorough inspection on a clearer day, but meanwhile, maybe some of you can help throw in ideas.
Thanks.

I would check the inner pad. It will be worn more than the outside pad, even if there is no problem with the calliper, and even more if the calliper is not sliding correctly. I would also check out the rotor dust shield, CV joint boot, and everything else you can see while the tire is off. Before removing the wheel, try turning it by hand (apply emergency brake, and put the trans in neutral), and listen for noises or grinding feeling.
at times a rock can get between the pad and the rotor and be stuck there for a short period of time.
also, i have had dust shields that have rubbed on the backside of the rotor... and there is no way to see it happening until you take off the shield
