title is pretty clear how do you guys feel about different colored engine bays? mad JdM yO?!? Ricer? just plain ugly?
my motor is out and the engine bay is lookin kinda rough so im debating whether to just paint it milano red like the honda-gods intended or do somethin a little different.

Lol i actually dont mind the rusty hoods. Idk thats just me it looks kinda cool. But anyway back to the topic, just spray it red bro. Shiny shiny red is hard to resist
it depends if you painted your car a fresh, new, glossy color
but then left your engine bay (and underside of the hood) the old OEM faded , discolored paint.
thats my main concern when im painting my car,
im gonna paint it soona diff color but wont have the equip to pull the engine and paint the engine bay

there's a guy on here who's signature reads, "trends come and go, but clean and simple last forever."
paint your bay the same color as your car. I want to vomit when I see someone with a different colored bay. I remember seeing a guy who had his black coupe's bay painted teal. he THOUGHT he was ballin...

I like that quote, thats the way things should be.
Dude, paint it the same as the car. It will look more clean, the mis-matched engine bay never looked so well.
I'm a fan of keeping it the same but I think white bays look the nicest. Everything looks so clean in a well kept white bay. I don't know if I would ever do it to my red coupe though. If you do decide to go with a different color, I think white's your best bet.
If you can't paint it the same color as the car then go black. It will match with w/e color you decide to paint your exterior in the future and you won't have to pull the engine for it.
White engine bay is nice but hard to keep clean if it's a DD. My wifes 09 sedan is white and 20k miles later the white bay doesn't look so white and her car is stock.

I generally like it bodycolor.
That said, on the road race forum, I heard a great argument for painting your engine bay and wheelwells a light color: It makes the car much easier to work on. The light colors reflect light better and allow you to see better in dark areas of the car.
A lot of the actual track racers on honda-tech paint their stuff light for this reason. It's almost a must if you're completely tearing the engine and suspension apart on your car every single weekend.
Personally, my car's already silver, so I've never had to do anything. Best color ever IMO.

I probably should not offer my opinion, but I will anyways...
Personally I don't like the different colored engine bays. Yes I've seen the out of control baller status ones with immaculate paint, shaved, tucked, ITBs on a fully built K swap, etc. etc. but with the mismatched bay I think it detracts from the cleanliness of the car.
I'm a touch old school though. I like the "old fashioned" look from the early 00's when it was more about functional lowering jobs, wheels that didn't require -6 degrees of rear camber to make them fit because of 0 offset and an 8'' wide wheel with 185/45/whatever tires.
I will not cite specific examples, but I see cars all the time on here and other sites where if only they had a matching bay and some decent fitting wheels the cars would be absolutely PERFECT.
...but then again it's not my cars we're talking about. The cars very well may be perfect in the owners' eyes, and in the end that's all that matters. I'm sure my +45 Spoon SW388s and a finger's gap between my tires and fender wells makes some people cringe, or my old school Tanabe fartpipe ruins my car for others. That's cool - I built the car for me just as hopefully the new gen guys build their cars for themselves.

mis-matched bay makes the car, especially the exterior paint job, look cheap. It's pretty much on the same level as mis-matched door jambs to me.
I'd say I still stick to that sentiment. An uber clean car with a matched engine bay will stand the test of time and it will be harder to "date" it so to speak, but if the mix-matched engine bay thing dies out then years from now it would be easy to point and say "oh wow check out that 2008-2010 era built Civic over there..."
I think it's funny how there used to be a LOT of animosity amongst "Honda guys" and "VW guys" and yet it appears that all of the "new" Honda trends are simply recycled VW stuff. I cannot say the VW peeps started all of these things, but I saw all of this stuff first on various VWs (usually on VW Vortex) BEFORE I ever saw it on a Honda:
- Rusted/patina'd hoods and various body parts
I know this dates back to the hotrod days, but I'm saying within the past ten years it was a big VW thing in the "import scene."
- Low offset wheels with stretched tires
I also know that this was even a lowrider truck thing, but again VW guys took it to another level.
- Staggered wheels (wider stance in rear) on an FF car
I've never gotten this one,but it was huge with VW peeps and has caught on with Honda heads as well. Wider stance in the rear than front on an FF car.
- Shaved/tucked engine bays
I can't say anything really negative about this because if done right it does look amazing. I'd seen a lot of crazy VR6 swapped old VWs like rabbits/MK2s long before I'd ever seen a Honda done this way. Again I know this goes much further back into the hotrod days, but I'm just keeping the "VW guys did it first" theme going.
- Mismatched (intentionally painted with a nice quality paintjob) engine bay
When I saw this on VWs back in the day it shocked me. It was as if people with the money to build a "perfect" ride were basically saying
"Yeah I paid for this baller paintjob and intentionally mismatched the bay - what are YOU gonna do about it?"
It blew me away, and I don't mean I was extremely impressed with it.
People struggle to find an "identity" for their Honda these days. I'd say it's because although we own probably the most popular, "played out" cars to be modified many people strive to try and be "different" with theirs. At some point a crazy swap, a nice suspension set-up, with clean monochrome paint schemes aren't enough for some people. That's when he crazy patterns, hella flush wheel sets, mismatched engine bays, etc. etc. started coming out in force.
haha i like the way you put that. i pray to god that your post doesnt start a trend where diff color door jambs is the thing to do bahaha
The VW guys do it, leave it to them...It is referred to as a Harliquin

So funny how some honda people bite VW trends that have been existing for years.
-Rusted Hoods
-Rusted CARS
-Rat
-Tire Stretch
-Ultra low offset

Still ugly.
The VW posted was the 1996 Harlequin - 264 units made.
Super rare.
Super ugly.
I'd actually seen a few in person when they were new back when I was delivering parts.

If it's going to be mismatched, at least just make it a super-wet gloss black. Black will "sort-of" go with pretty much anything I guess. Then you can change the exterior color to your heart's desire without having to re-paint the bay all the time.
