Icon2 2000 Accord body work questions

Hi Everyone,

A friend of mine recently got a 2000 Accord with some body damage. I am helping to fix it up.

The drivers side bumper bar mount is bent. The bend is inwards and ends a few inches back.

I want to install a new bumper bar and radiator mount but I need to fix the bumper bar mount first.

How difficult is it to bend the bumper bar mount? Could I just hit it with a sledge? Is this something only a shop should handle? How much should it cost?

Thanks!

go to JY and pull all the parts you need from a car involved in a rear end collision.

you will need
upper and lower cross bars
driver side bulkkhead
front bumper and mounts
prolly new fender hood and front cover

also check out the suspension and make SURE that the subframe is not tore up

Thanks a lot for the answer and parts list.

I am a bit confused now though.

The bumper mounts are welded to the frame rail and the drivers one is bent inwards. I need to bend it back enough to get a new bumper bar to fit.

Can I just hit the bent bumper mount with a sledge?

I had a mechanic check out the frame and he said it was fine.

Thanks again!

That driver's side rail is bent and swayed over a good bit. Best thing to do would be to set it up on a frame machine and pull it back to original position and square up the front end unibody so that the sheetmetal will all line up when you reinstall it. Otherwise, you are going to be shimming and rigging everything just to make it appear OK.

Thanks!

I will go find a frame mechanic.

Any guesses on how much this should cost me?

I'd just get a pair of vise grips and turn it back onto shape on the upper part of the radiator support.
Pics from a little further distance would be more helpful. Items related to "impact absorption" aren't always good to do just shape it back up, since they are meant to collapse when hit, and that's supposed to be done only once in their "life spam". I'd suggest junk yard (remove it yourself to lower the cost) for replacement parts.

I was thinking about bending the upper radiator mount back but the part is only $30 at the JY. I will definitely be using JY pats where possible.

The only other part that is bent is the very end of the frame rail. I think bending it back a half an inch would allow a new bumper bar to fit.

Hopefully, that isn't severe enough to not be worth straightening.

I will try to get some further back pictures.

Thanks everyone

If you find a small shop and talk to the tech, it might be something they would do as a side job for less money. Tell them you just want it squared up and the rail pulled back in line. You can do the rest from there.

Good luck man.

while you can bend the parts back into place, the steel no longer has the same strenght. it was weakened in the collision (from being bent) and will weaken even more when you bend it back and that is why I said replace it with parts from a jy.

The next time you get into a collission with that part of the car, the damage will be significantly worse......
