Default Sideskirt painting conflictions

Ok so ive been getting some conflicting views. Everywhere I see says to sand the skirts before painting them. One of the body shop guys I know said if you sand em within a few months they will bubble and peel. Went to the store today n got adhesion promoter, PPG in a spray can, and clear...all I needa know is what the deal is with sandin em so I can paint em. Thanks in advance!

I was going to but the damn plastic tabs pissed me off and I give up for now. I don't see any need to sand. I painted my grill which is made of the same material and it came out great! Like 98 said, just a good cleaning and dry time then have at it.

okay. if they are textured plastic here is the procedure to paint.

-remove side skirts (duh)
-clean very well with soap and water
-sand with 800-1000 grit sand paper or a red scotch brite pad
-wipe down with wax and grease remover
-adhesion promoter (make sure its made for plastic. i use bulldog)
-wait 20mins
-spray a liberal amount of trim black or sem makes an awesome paint made for honda bumpers
-do as many coats as desired
-wait at least 24 hours before reinstalling the side skirts

now if they are painted body color, its the same process except you will want to use a high build primer instead of adhesion promoter and wet sand with 400 then 800 to smooth it out. it is important to sand because the small scratches you put in the finish are going to hold the paint on there and make it last longer than it would if you just sprayed right over it. good luck.

^wow. I just cleaned my grill down with soap and water, let dry and hit it will about 3 coats of semi - gloss to hide imperfections if there were. I was gonna do the same for the skirts. I do not see any need to do such a huge *** procedure on stock skirts.

if you want the finish to last years rather than months, then yes, you do need to do a big production. thats the difference between professionals and backyard mechanics. there are two ways to do something. the right way or the wrong way. dont be lazy.
