Rustoleum+mineral spirits+HVLP gun= what ratio?
It's got a 1.5 tip, I searched everywhere and people are saying anywhere from 4:1 to 1:1. Will I be fine if I keep it simple with a 1:1 ratio? How many coats do you think 2qts (mixed) will last? Thanks guys.
theres no real science behind it. just thin it out til you can spray it. usually 10% or so. just experiment a little. also it usually take about 3 qts to a gallon to paint a car
dont need to really thin it out much on a 1.5 tip - is it feels as thick as milk, you're good. i recently sprayed rustoleum on a subframe and thinned it out a lot, it dripped all over
.
you can see i thinned it too much - there's a lot of drippings on the floor...

Hey fventura if I remember correctly you did a big project with rustoleum and ended up switching to real paint right? You have first hand experiance on how it sucks.
Its so hard to pound it into peoples head how bad it is.
the only way I would do it again if the cars next trip was to the junkyard

^^^ i didn't use rustoleum, i used boat paint - it's a higher quality material (compared to rustoleum) that worked great... i switched to real paint because it went from a budget build to an all out build and cheap paint wasn't going to cut it...
i sold it before i finished it but i started a 1993 coupe project to take its place.. i'm in the process of repainting that also. real auto paint though.

the only problem i see people having with rustoleum paint is the fact that they leave orange peel on it and dont clear coat. although there was a thread somewhere on here talking about ptoblems sanding rustoleum when you want to paint again
boat paint isnt that much higher quality IMO but from what I saw that k20 hatch was gonna be sick. You should have finished it!

What ratio did you mix? Would 2qts rustoleum to 1qt mineral spirits be good? Thanks.
usually reducer is mixed 1:1 man...i really hope ur not painting ur car wih that...ur gunna be pissed after all the work you put into it...
what tip did you use for primer ?? and 1.5 tip is too large for basecoat btw, but its ur call.
and 2qts should last for a whole car...iono wtf that guy sayin 3qts to a gallon...maybe hes talkin about rustoleum, but wih real auto paint you only need 2 qts. basecoats are never sprayed heavily.

Yeah I'll be using rustoleum, well the paint's already pretty bad and I don't care for the car much, as long as it looks better than it does now, I'm not going to use a primer, what tip would you recommend? I read the rustoleum paint is like a primer, base, and clear in one so I thought the 1.5 would be fine but idk.
what's wrong with this forum? noob.
anywho, this process has been proven to be effective at a cheap rate. the problem is that many people who try this process just spray it, and leave it, and thats when it looks really bad. they don't take the time to make it look good, by wetsanding, and polishing...
OP, 1:1 ratio is wayy too thin. try 5%, if thats spraying too thick, then try 10%, good luck - hope you make it look like a proper paint job.
it takes a lot of work to get results like this - but it can be done:

lol what dont you people understand about fading with these **** *** paint jobs you all promote on here, you call me the noob, i love how every 50 dollar paint job car on this forum looks like **** after a year lol for the money he will spend in rustoleum every year, he could have a fantastic single stage AUTOMOTIVE grade paint job for the same price that will last 5 or more years
for the money, its a good process, and if maintained well, they will stand up to the test and be as good as a single stage job.
im with you on that one. lol...not everyone on this forum but ffs jus save a little more and you'll save a LOT of time.
and you should use somethin like a:
1.8 tip for primer
1.4 tip for base
1.2/1.3 tip clear
and wow...ur not gunna primer ?? lol if you're not even goin to primer or anything...i doubt u'll take good care of the paint and u even said u dont care for the car very much...jus leave it alone then man. you're just going to waste a lot of time and some money cuz if you dont have any experience in painting its a HUGE pain.

Thanks guys, only reason I wasn't going to primer was because people keep saying I don't need to if I'm using rustoleum, but if it's recommended then I'll do it. Haha yeah I'm going to wet sand and buff, it would look like **** if I didn't. Hey Spawne, I'd love to have an automotive grade paint job! Wanna pay for it? No? Then GTFO if your not going to say anything useful. But thanks again for the help guys, I'm going to start painting next week, I'll make a thread and post some pics of the progress.

hes better off not using primer, if he does theres a good chance the urethane primer which is catalyzed will react with the rustoleum.

just make sure you spray thin coats sand alot... you will need more then 2qts if your spraying it on...
Dont listen to everything you hear on the forums... Test a part see if you like it..
What kind of gun did you use? Oh and the tip size on my gun is 1.4, sorry. So 1:1 wasn't too watery? How long did you wait between coats before sanding/laying down a second coat? Thanks.
Well I mixed 50/50 and it's looking great! Just got done wet sanding with 600grit after 2 coats of paint, how should I clean the car now before laying more paint down? I've got everything masked off so if I wash the car it's all going to fall off, thanks.
I waited 24hours before sanding an painting
