Default Temp gauge repair for d15b1. Newbie to Civics first challenge

To all the Honda Gurus out there that are giving of their Wisdom when I ask for help, a grateful thanks you to all of you.

I have purchased a 1991 Civic with a D1b51 engine and a four speed transmission. This has turned out to be a good running car even though it burns a bit of oil and has 350,000 K's on it.

The body is straight and does not have any rust holes at all.

At this time she is a commuter, later she will be turned into a very nice rebuild and up grade as my experience grows with Honda's.

What I am trying to do now is get the bugs out of her. The Temp gauge on the dash does not function. I have replaced the radiator, next is the thermostat and the temperature sending unit.

What is the easiest way to remove and re-install the sending unit, when it is beside the oil filter, under the fuel system in the back of the engine?

When I put the new rad in the car, I used the larger size. Will the fan motor and fan diameter used on the smaller rad be enough for the larger cooling surface?

Thanks Again for the information.
