Default Replacing Mitsuba starter

Hi all,

I am currently replacing my mitsuba starter on my 90 crx si. When I took my starter out, the part which sticks inside the engine block is covered with a brown powder. I think that part is called the overrunning clutch assembly. Is that something I should be concerned about?

edit: here is a pic of what I am talking about.

Thanks in advance for any insight you may have on the matter.

Is the protective plate on the bottom of your tranny removed by any chance? Its held on by 3 or 4 bolts just near the oil pan. It will allow crap like water/dirt to get up in there and it looks like rust.

No, the protective plate on the bottom of the tranny is not removed. I had the car since new and I have never removed it. It doesn't look like rust. It is just brown powder and I can wipe it off. Is that just powder from the clutch? When I look inside the hole on the engine block I see some brown powder on what appears to be the flywheel as well.

This is the first time the starter has ever been off? If so, dont worry about it. Just replace with a new starter and go for it. If you have no metal flakes in there or any other damage, then you're fine.

Yeah, this is the first time the starter has been off. Man the lower starter bolt was a biatch to get at. I have a feeling I am going to have even more fun torquing the bolt back on.

thanks mate.
