NEED HELP/4.4 vs 4.7 Final-drive
You are not very clear on what you are asking. I am going out on a limb here and I'm gonna assume you are referring to a transmission.
USDM all years = 4.4
JDM 96 Spec = 4.4
JDM 98 Spec = 4.7
I personally, would take a USDM/96 Spec trannie with the 4.7 FD upgraded. If that is not an option, IIRC, the 98 spec has better 1-3 gearing and the 96 spec though longer gearing shines a little more in the upper gears... at least according to the Type R Legends dvd.

yeah i was talking about the trannys its that im going type R and i dont know if i should get jdm 98 itr or jdm 97 itr i knnow that the only difference is the trannys final drive and the headers 4-1 and if i want the 98 i would pay 1000 more and i just need to know if its worth it to pay 1000 for just headers and the 4.7 final drive
That has been answered alot on here. I know all 98-SpecR motors were not ported by had as the early 96's were, and due to that they are more 'consistent' than the hand done ones. I suggest watching the type-r legends dvd. I think you can watch the whole thing on youtube. They do some nice comparisons of the 96 and 98-specR's.
The differences in the 96 Spec and the 98 Spec trannies is more than just the FD. They both have the same first gearing, after that all of the other gears are different.

well thanks but im also asking would you guys pay 1000 dollars just for the 4.7 and the 4-1 thats the question is the 4.7 that big of a deal for a street car
do you drive your car in highway for a long travel?? What is MPG?? that's crazy!! do you pull the car at 70mph and then let it go in neutral LOL!!! what is your RPM when you go at 70mph??
Go to MFactories site and they have a gear calculator that will answer all of your RPM/speed questions. www.teammfactory.com
i have 4.9 fd with ls5th gear.
i decided to install ls 5th gear after 2 years.
waste of labour $$
it annoyed the hell out of me on highway without ls 5th on 4.9 FD lol

Being an R is noisy to begin with I don't think another 400-500 more rpm's would bother me as long as it still had full interior and a decent mellow exhaust. No fart cans ya know.
at 70mph, i m at about 4300 rpm . According to mfactory, the mpg doesnt drop at a higher rpm cruising on the freeway since u will be giving less throttle to keep a steady speed. And yes, i daily the car everyday with city/freeway ( cruise at 75-80mph)... longest trip is usually a 99miles trip to the track and 99 miles back home.
my track car has a USDM trans with 4.7 and my daily has a normal USDM trans with 4.4. The difference isn't too earth shattering but the 4.7 was money well spent. It makes for excellent highway driving, I've actually got 34mpg out of it before. It has made a world of a difference on track, at the cost of more shift points per lap but it's the best spent $400 or whatever I paid for it.
