Default Balance Shaft removal

My h23 vtec block is almost done at the machine shop. I'm having the balance shafts removed and having the oil holes seeled and shaft hole plugged. Has anyone done this and if you have have there been any problems? Can anyone see any problems that could arise? BTW the block has been GE sleeved and the crank has been balanced.

i know this may be stupid question for some, but i have noticed some drag cars that dont use the balance shaft, what benifits do you gain from removing this and what may be the downfall..

postive, less weight, less rotational mass on the crank

negative, you WILL feel your engine, just wont idle as smooth as it does with them

how much will you feel it ... like to a point it gets anoying or a little bit...

if you increase the idle does it fix it ???

is the vibration only at idle or all through the power band.. how bad is it at 2-3k (cruizing speed) ?

how would it effect in the very high rpms? i know that if you balance your crankshaft and tune you can run at high rpms does this effect that?

I have always run my car without the balancing shafts and i have never had any problems. It does cause a lil more vibration at idle. It doesn't affect anything else. We have seen 2to5 HP increase without the balancing shafts.

As far as sealing the holes, all one needs to do is rotate the pressed in bearings and some custom plates to cover the holes. No welding is needed. You could even just remove the belt and replace it if the vibration at idle gets to you....

Well, 2-5 horsepower isn't worth it to me.. but would you consider it a neccassary mod for building a high revving H22? I dunno if it's worth it to me, or do I have to do it?

ok I got some Cool replies so i'll try it one more time!!

the vibrations you guy talk about, would this be at low rpm's only with no engine load (not driving) or although the power band.

(question 1)

is the vibration still existant under load if so is it less or more ?

(question 2)

have you guys checked your main bearings sincethen to see if it does accelerate bearing wear

(question 3)

do you guys use an aftermarket crank pulley with this or not ???

(question 4)

how do you guys make the appropriate modification to the oil pump..

mine is in peices my motor but i can't visulize the pump but isn't the pump turned by the balance shaft belt, and that is also connected to both balance shafts .... so if you remove the tiny timing belt what will turn your oilpump ??????

2-5hp wheel hp or crank power ? (another question)

because my car is a 96-00 ek civic with hcp mounts so i'm wondering if the vibration would be even greater since it's not the factory mounts...

(PLEASE ANSWER)

and also !!

(DO YOU have to get the CRANK FULLY BALANCED???)

or not needed.. i'm using stock rods and stock h22a jspec pistons ....

I do appreciate all the help guys !! ALL !!

even if it is at the wheels, its not worth it to me. honda made it for a reason, and im going to run it on my 4-500 whp street driven car, also im using the stock crank pully...its just not worth wearing out a 5k doller engine for 10 even 15 hp, ill get it somewhere else

just because a race car has it doesn't mean its worth it, remember these guys rebuild there engine many, many times in one season...and they dont pay for it

Bringing it back.............

As far as plugging the oil passages, what negative results exist if this is not performed?? Also, how bad is it?
I understand that it may not be optimal for performance, but bottom line: Will this kill a 450hp engine???

The oil passages have to be plugged... if not you will lose oil pressure. You can do this by 2 different methods. Rotate the balance shaft bearings or inserting plugs in the main bearing cap. I've removed the shafts from my current set-up and to be honest I cannot tell a difference with the way the engine runs without them. As far as power wise, I have not put it on the dyno. I've street tuned the set-up at 14 psi so I'm guessing it's in the mid 300 range. The engine should put out around mid 500's. So with that said... removing them is safe.

I actually can't feel any extra vibration at idle or under acceleration in my car, I have not checked bearing wear and I am running with the stock harmonic dampner and also you dont have to make any modification to the oil pump because it is not driven by the balance shaft belt, the oil pump is driven by the crankshaft which drives the timing belt and balance shaft belt
