Bought an oem remote for my 98 civic ex. Car has an aftermarket head unit. Can I still program the alarm with the remote? Do I have to buy an oem radio?

Just buy an aftermarket key less entry. Or better yet get a real alarm system installed. I always recommend viper. I have only seen few go bad. And I have seen a lot of other brands that were toast, for no particular reason.

ok behind my dash ( cup holders ) there is what can only be described as a shelled radio. is that whats left of the original radio with just the security still hooked up ? i have an aftermarket kenwood. the old keyfob i had never worked and i have a date with the dealer to program a new one. should i call it off?

 

There are harnesses that allow you to keep the factory deck behind the dash so you are able to keep your keyless working, however a good aftermarket alarm+keyless is the way to go. You will be way better off that way.

 

HOLD ON pause for ten seconds. i was just reading this article. apparently 97 civics is the only year that the radio was tied into the security and dome light... don't know if its true or not but you might be fine.

 

damn i'm all confused. nevertheless, i think i'm gonna go with a viper alarm and just sell the oem fob on ebay.

 

I have seen people tuck the OEM stereo in the dash or under the seat just so they can have the OE keyless. It may work for you too.

 

Wanted to add, what you also could do is leave stock hu in the stock spot and have the aftermarket hu in the cubby hole behind cup holders, leave the 12 volt, sitch 12 and ground going to stocker and a theif will think you have a stock radio....

Ok so the test you need to do to see if you have a stock radio hidden behind your dash, and this happens 9 out of 10 times since the radio controls the factory alarm, and dome light, but just put open the door and if the dome light comes on then you do have the stock radio with the jumper wire harness, also make sure that the switch is in the middle position or door position. If you dome light works most likely the radio is there and will need to be pulled out to program the new key fob. You can do it very easy your self all you have to do is:
1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).
2. Press and hold the Valet-Disarm
button on the radio (between the
AM/FM and CD/TAPE buttons) to
enter the programming mode.
(Continue to hold the button
during this procedure, or
programming will be cancelled.)
Check that the power door locks
cycle to confirm that you’re in the
programming mode.
3. Within 5 seconds, press the “Lock” or “Unlock”
button on the transmitter. Check that the power
door locks cycle to confirm that the code was
accepted.
4. Within 10 seconds, press the “Lock” or “Unlock”
button on each of the remaining transmitters.
5. After all the transmitters have been programmed,
release the Valet-Disarm button to exit
programming mode.

ok i have a problem with that. my dome light comes on and there seems to be a stripped radio behind the dash. there isn.t a face tape deck nothing there is a single green board in the back that the "jumper" connects to... am i screwed?

 

Post a pic, normally there is the main harness and then something plugs into that and then goes to the deck.

 

Yes if they stripped it down to the green board then there is no way to reprogram the key fob to your alarm, you should really take that radio out of you car so you don't short out anything in your car. Also you can look into car alarms for under 100 so you will have an alarm and keyless entry and also you can jump the wires in the harness to retain your dome light, if you need it I can put a link to a write up for you.

Sorry out of luck they took the face off for some reason, nothing you can do to reprogram the remote. You can buy another on off the internet or just get an aftermarket alarm.
