BOOSTING in CA State Ref time ! GSR 300+
Hey there Honda-Tech
I've been doing my research for a few weeks now,
so I'm not completely lost. Running out of time though.
DILEMMA:
I have to smog my car soon in August,
It is a Civic 97 with a 98 GSR motor.
So I'm gonna have to bar it.
& my budgetttttt...
I also have a 97 Integra LS which is a fun DD and extremely reliable,
as well as clean (sorta) which I can sell to either fund my project,
even though i would really PREFER NOT TO.
those funds range from:
4000 or 3500 for a quick sale.
My budget before I sell the car would be
2500-3500..
after would be an additional 3500 or so..
TOTAL BUDGET: 2500-3500 PLUS 3500-4000
GOAL:
start with 300whp AT LEAST and then move on in the future
Motor is at the shop,
GSR HEAD: refurbished, 3-angle valve job,
resurfaced, etc, DONE.
planning to buy:
HEAD:
skunk2 pro series manifold
or a edlebrock manifold
BOTTOM BLOCK:
EAGLE RODS
WISECO, ARIAS, CP, JE PISTONS. (i think i've seen deals on here)
BLOCK GUARDS? (there's a poll on here gets me thinkin)
ACL BEARRINGS?
81.5mm bore? or 84mm? (not sure yet)
NEW OEM OIL PUMP
NEW OEM WATER PUMP (any aftermarket suggestions on here?)
ARP HEAD STUDS (I HAVE A SET)
BOOST:
GARRETT TURBO t3/t04 57 trim 63 a/r
TIAL 38MM wastegate
RC 440's or 550's?
Walbro 255lb fuel pump
3" downpipe
exhaust manifold undecided (if i do sell the teggy, i'd like to install A/C in the civic, summer man, summer.....)
EXHAUST:
stock GSR exhaust with cat, with Electric Cutout Switch (after car is bar'd)
INTERCOOLER: undecided

I'm not sure on the laws in CA, but i'm fairly certain you have to get a CARB legal turbo kit which kind of kills your options for anything decent. You may want to look into that further before investing in something "illegal." I'm sure someone more knowledgable in CA's cool laws will chime in with some help.
Schister is right! The LAWS out here suck. If you have to get your car BAR'd, then everything has to be CARB legal. If you just need to get a regular smog (and have a guy that doesn't check visual) then you are good to go. Low PSI on boost won't hurt your emissions since you have a cat. I have a friend that has passed the last 3 times at 7psi. He has a t3/t4 setup on his gsr with a walboro intank pump, 550 injectors. The smog guy babies his car & it just passes. Oh yeah, he swaps out the test pipe for a cat right before the test...
Yeah, I don't HAVE to get my car bar'd at this
time, meaning I haven't gotten a ticket for it,
but I thought if I get it bar'd before smog,
I would just have the motor built, and then
smog the car, and add the turbo kit afterwards,
after getting that beautiful sticker saying I'm allowed
to have the gsr in my civic, I would AT least
have that to show off to the CHP around here...
This is y I'm debating on whether or not to keep my teggy,
I would use the civic for the weekend car, but
