if I'm understanding you correctly the timing belt has shifted a 1/2in on the water pump gear, correct?

no, the belt should not be off the gear at all. riding at the edge is fine but not off.

have you tried to redo the tension on the timing belt? maybe the tension is a bit loose and the belt has walked a little. when redoing the tension, be sure to locate the belt onto the pulleys correctly and that it stays there as you rotate the engine by hand.

how many miles are on the car and when was the timing belt last serviced?

its got 87k and i just changed clutch and it seems like the water pump itself is shifted away from the block were it should be up flush with it right?

WOW! sounds strange. but i see stanger stuff now and then. either the belt walked like touring accord stated or the pulley/gear is coming off the pump and that is walking. i took a pump apart to see how it works. it took a 40 ton H-press to get it off (that was all i had). but after i seen it, i was amazed at the durrability of the bearing. it was like over 1 inch wide!! i cant imagine a timing gear on the pump walking out like that but you never know. can you post pics? i do believe its the belt most likely walking off though
