Default 92 Civic DX: LOW Gas Mileage

I just bought this car last week and the guy told me he gets 28~ mpg. I had to fill up today and got about 17 mpq. I'm F'n pissed. Any ideas why or how I can get my mpq up? I'll check my air filter tonight and look at my tires. Other then that, I need some help.

It's an auto tranny and I'm having some hard shifting issues. I got a cel code 17 also.

Thanks in advance!!!

Complete tune up, e.g. spark plugs, rotor, cap, wires, ^air filter.....get your speed sensor fix.

Code 17 VSS. Check and and see if the connection is dirty. Then, as always, do a full tune up. Plugs, wires, cap & rotor, fuel filter, air filter, O2 sensor. Then you should be easily in the 30mpg range, if you drive with sense.

Like the other guys said, do a full tune up and see if it improves. You should be getting fuel mileage in the high 20s to mid 30s or so from my experience with DX automatics depending on how you drive and where most of your driving is.

I figured I should be getting mid 20s atleast. I baby it to work. My transmission is shifting hard too. I think that might be an issue with the gas drinking. I was told that ATF-z1 is a MUST! Is this true? Any suggestions on what type of plugs? I heard nkg are the best???? Any other recommended brands for the rest of the stuff for the tune up?

I got some sea foam for my vss to clean with. Good idea?

Sorry for the questions. Thanks!!

If you can afford it, get your parts from honda, if no then just pick up some NGK V-power plugs and the rest of the components at local parts store, all should come with like a year warranty. Change your oil, fuel filter, and transmission fluid while your at it.

I would use Honda ATF only. As for the other stuff, if you can afford it from Honda, go ahead. If not go to the parts store and get your parts but I recommend only running NGK spark plugs, I have used Advance Auto Rotor Buttons and Dist. Caps with no problems time and time again but I only run NGK Wires and Plugs. Like the guy above me said, you can change your Fuel Filter if you want to..but IMO it seems to be sucking plenty of fuel through it so I don't see how it can be bad. That's always my reasoning with the filter, might be a wrong way of thinking though.

As for the fuel mileage, You should for sure see mid 20s. My Mom's Auto 94 DX 4-Door gets on average 30-32MPG with her usual back road country driving. On long highway trips my Parents have gotten usually 36-38MPG out of it on the average, with no Cruise Control of course.

Any auto parts store, e.g AutoZone... "cap & rotor" = distributor cap and the rotor button (located inside the cap)

So, I realized last night that my tachometer/odometer is not working properly. I would assume this is b/c my vss is not working properly. I got this print out on how to clean the vss. Does anyone have an idea on what else could be causing this problem. That would explain why I thought I was only getting 17mpg.

What a c/f.....

Also, do i need to flush out the ATF that's not from honda before I put the Honda ATF-z1 in? Or is draining it enough?

Your tachometer should work while the VSS is bad, the speedometer/odometer will not be working if VSS is bad. So if both is not working then you have other issues. Just drain your ATF and as you keep draining and refilling all of the old stuff will be gone.

well, i've notice that when my speedo doesn't work, the tach/odometer do not work. I did find this site on how to clean/fix the vss. See below. Also, the reason I ask about the ATF is b/c before regular walmart purchased atf was put into it. I didn't know if it mattered.

Your tachometer runs off of the ignition system, independent from VSS, check the cluster to make sure everything is connected properly. Also honda's auto tranny don't like seeing anything else other than Honda's ATF. Like I said, eventually it will replaced by the new fluid.

well, took my vss off last night and used sea foam to clean the guts. Now my Speedo, tach, and odometer work. Tranny is still shifting hard after putting ATF-Z1 in it. But I think it's a little better.
