Default 40 MPH in 4th, odd sound?!

i overrevved the other night, trying to shift into third, but my broke *** HCP shift linkage sent me into 1st!!! just revved for a second and i caught it, but now when i am cruising in 4th at about 40, i get a strange sound, somewhat high pitched, almost a rubbing sound? wondering if my tensioner on the timing belt could have a problem, otherwise possibly the trans? it only seems to happen at this point, no other gears. thanks.
