Default tachometer problem in 92 cx

like the title states, i have a 92 civic cx hatchback with a b20v motor in it with a b16 trans. It has a 93 lx civic cluster in it redline at 6500 numbers stop at 9k. The issue is the tac hits rev limiter at 7500ish rpm, maybe even earlier. A buddy of mine has a 94vx with the tac that redlines at 6 and numbers go to 8, and has a b20v in it too and does the same thing. At redline in second, the speed is right around 60(which is about 8k in second which is normal for b16trans), but the tachometer is only at 7500ish rpm.

just wondering if any of you guys have had this problem or know how to fix it. Thinking bout just getting a new cluster, but since mybuddy is having the same problem maybe its a common problem for the eg clusters.

please let me know.

could be cluster.... more than likely ecu. most ecu's have cut offs , have to chip to get rid of it. Don't waste $$ on a new cluster.

Often my tach will read 7000ish at 60 mph in 2nd. My car has a B16A.
I allways assumed the tach was off, because if it's reaching 60 mph in second the engine is spinning to at least 8000 rpm.

Why do you say ECU? If he's reaching 60 mph in 2nd the engine is limiting at the correct rpm.

I could be wrong but I *thought* the tach receives it's signal directly from the distributor, not the ECU.

hey, I got the same problem. I got a p06 chipped (found out it was chipped recently when I replaced a p72 on it) on my eg6 vx with b18c1. I thought the p06 stopped me from reving to 8k rpm, therefore I bought an oem p72 obd1. However, problem exists... engine cuts at 72xx rpm in the rpm display, exactly same as before!! Now, I concluded that my p06 is chipped (surprisingly slower than a oem p72), possibly limits at 8k rpm. P72 absolutely limits at 8k rpm. As a result, I start thinking about the wrong scale of the gauge. I bought a apexi neo digital gauge (still waiting for the shipment), we'll see what's wrong with the ecu or gauge.
