Default 1992 Acura Integra complete makeover

I've been a lurker on here for a while, only checking for info/research or the classifieds. Figured I'd stop being so lurker-ish and start a build thread! I just copied and pasted this from other forums.

This thread is going to mark my progress with my 1992 Acura Integra LS. I am doing a complete restoration of the car, inside and out, to the best of my ability, as I am doing 99% of the work myself (paint, help, etc. account for what I don't do). This thing won't be slapped together in a few weeks, or even months. There is no time frame and I have no set budget in mind. This is my first car, and was my brother's, so I wanna do everything right and make it virtually a new car. So this is gonna be a slow build, with progress determined by the amount of time I get to work on the car, funds, school, and sorta my social life, just a little bit. I'm posting it here as motivation for myself to keep updates constant and for any info/questions I need, but I'm hoping it's a motivation to others as well. Enjoy yo!

History of the car:
-Used to be my brother's back in the 90s
-Has been through a number of motor swaps (used to be auto)
-Was beat up a bit when he owned it
-Gave it to me in April 2009
-Started working on it in June
-B20Vtec that was in the car took a ****, got a B16A
-Still working on it

This was from the summer 2009. When I first started working on the car, my only goal was to get it driving, nothing more.

General overview of what I'm going for:
-Repaint Milano Red (interior, exterior, engine bay)
-Make the interior sexy for da beyotches
-Suspension setup for track (coilovers, camber, chassis reinforcement).
-Good tune (not sure of what I want yet, gots ta learn myself some more on this)
-Stock B16A with I/H/E

All these pics are from the summer.

Here is the car when I first got her. Yeah, mad ricey, I know lol

So I took of them sides

Took off that hood and bumper

Got a few parts

And got to work!

I got all the black interior pieces and took out the red painted ones. The interior looks like what I've posted in the first post now.

Put on some mud guards:

It took me forever to find a front bumper and hood, but I finally got them both just recently:

This hood I borrowed from my brother-in-law for a few days until I found one for myself:

Got my own for $40:

These pics are from the summer also.

Motor was a B20b from a 96 or 97 CRV, the head was a B16. Since it **** on me, I got a newly rebuilt B16 with everything for $1300. Pulled the B20v, dropped in the B16. My DA isn't on the road yet; I still have to iron out some wrinkles. They are soo annoying, these little *** problems!

Here are some pictures:

B20v

Dave

B16A, obd0 converted to obd1

Pulling the B20v and dropping in the B16

Since then, I've switched the valve covers, and cleaned everything up. I also had to flip the head gasket since the guy who rebuilt it put it on backwards and upside down. And I reused it...I know, not supposed to but money is tight right now. I'll change it soon though. I'm not driving it yet, other than down the driveway the other day lol

These pics were also from the summer.

I took a long hiatus from the car, this whole past winter actually. I was thinking of selling it back in March, but got a change of heart. This is when I decided I would redo everything, and do it all correctly.

Here's some pics of what I've done so far when i started working on the DA again early this month.

There will be more to come as I complete more stuff. Right now, I'm in the process of sanding then painting the trunk and rear seat area. I'll be painting the carpet black to make it look cleaner then putting it back in. I will also be getting amber bulbs for my cluster and climate control. I painted my needles red already. I'm looking for a nice set of recaros and selling the tenzo r. I'm also painting a lot of the little interior pieces again to make them look better (black of course, not red lol). I'm also thinking about a set of speakers or something for some better sound. I'm not too knowledgeable in the area so if you guys have any advice/recommendations, feel free to offer. I won't have a back seat in the car and will carpet that area. Also looking to redo my headliner to make it plaid.

I took out the dash and all cruise control and a/c components. Next i'll be pulling the motor to clean up the bay and such.

are those metal plates under the glove box and steering column necessary? i was thinking of not putting them back for weight savings.

Didn't do much with the motor. once it's out, I'm gonna wire tuck this cluster **** of an engine bay

What i'm planning to do is pull the motor and work on motor and bay related things along with interior cleaning. Once all that is done, i'll put the interior back together then start work on the chassis and suspension.

Recent progress:
Bought a bunch of paint and sandpaper stuff

Painted the carpet (no pics, but it looks really nice)

Got the motor ready to be pulled, just need to get a cherry picker

Sanded down the trunk area some more.

Got rid of all the sound deadening

Had these little sticky spots

So I used this

The trunk and rear seat area are all sanded down and ready for paint. I'll be doing that when I get the chance this week. I also painted some of my little interior pieces matte black. It looks pretty good, i just hope it doesn't chip. Will get pics of them when i get the chance. The interior is almost done, just gotta get new parts and put it all back together. Motor coming out soon! more updates when I do more stuff.

one hell of a build bro looks way better than when you got it. i think youre going in the right direction with the build style and with the quality tedious work. thats the way i like my rides. i have my 1990 GS all stock but its all been kept up. got new bushing set and complete rebuild and all new suspension and brakes, axles and clutch too. everything has been replaced on mine. the body needs paint and the front seats need to be replaced but its okay. only got 2 pics on here of it but i just put em up yesterday or the day before. keep the updates comin

Thanks dude. Yeah, that's what I'm going for. Essentially, it'll be a new car once finished. I plan on doing some major suspension upgrades a little down the line, once I'm finished with cleaning it up a bit. Wanna post pics of your teg?

nice tear down. best DA build i have seen on here actually. curious what you've ran into with interior pieces? i did a build/restore on a dc2 back in 2007 and had quite a few craigslist calls tracking down pieces. with the age of the DA i would assume clean interior pieces would be hard to find.

At first I wasn't gonna go this far but I figure I might as well. Good luck with your db2, I'd love to own one one day.

Thanks a lot! I actually had a friend with a DA he was parting out with a complete interior that was exactly waht I needed so I had no trouble at all. They were pretty clean.

Updates should come soon! I've been busy with other things lately. I'm gonna paint my engine gold and tranny, what kind of paint should I use?

Haha tell me about it! I did the same, but for the sound deadening under the front seats I'm getting dry ice.

Yeah, and to think I was gonna give up not even halfway.

Started removing the supports and stuff behind the dash today. Will post pics when it's all done, which will probably be tomorrow since I'm busy today. Anyone have an answer to my question about the engine painting?

prep work is the most important when spray painting anything it needs to be clean clean clean
